We have updated the GMS requirements and related enforcement for new and existing Android phones in Japan, as they are required to show theSearch and Browser Choice Screen by the Mobile Software Competition Act (MSCA), which was announced by the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) on March 26, 2025.
To comply withnew requirements, new and existing builds for Android phones in Japan must preload the following version of GMS apps, which are included in the GMS October release for Android 15 and 16:
·Play Store (Phonesky) (com.android.vending) 47.9.30
·Search Selector (com.google.android.apps.setupwizard.searchselector) 1.35.808922502
·Setup Wizard (com.google.android.setupwizard) 236.808841380
·Google Search (Velvet) (com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox) 16.41.36
You can find the detailed technical information on how to configure your builds from the GMS requirements documentation. Note that these requirements only apply to phones and foldables - they do NOT apply to tablets.
We'll start enforcing this requirement for IR, LR, and MR builds running Android 15 or higher, that are submitted for approval onDecember 19, 2025 or later. (Note: Emergency MR or Security MR builds are exempted.)
