So you don't have to have a job in a field in order to like start a business in that field.
Um, before Happy Medium also, if you don't know me, I'm Taylor.
I'm one of the co founders of Happy Medium.
We're an arts club for casual artists based in New York City.
And like we're relatively successful, I would say.
Um, and the first question I always get asked is, well,
what art school did you go to or are you an artist?
And like, actually, no, I didn't go to art school.
I'm not an artist. And I think that's actually helpful in how Happy Medium has been successful is because I have that outsiders view.
But I do think people are sometimes nervous about starting a business
in a industry that they, um, are not, did not, did not have like have a job in.
So I wanted to take you back when I first graduated from college.
First of all, I studied economics pretty far away from art.Um, I have to say. And then from there I went into fashion and I got a job in fashion just by emailing, um, my alumni network and setting up meetings with people being like, what do you do?I would love, you know, I was just looking for a job basically. And so I finally I got a job at J Crew.I worked as a merchandiser. From there I went into e-commerce.It was Kind of at the beginning of like e commerce being a thing.Um, from J Crew I went to Ralph Lauren from Ralph Lauren I went to Victoria's Secret.
Um, I was at Victoria's Secret when uh,we had the idea for Happy Medium. So I quit my job started working on that full time. Um,it was going really well but then 20** happened and obviously couldn't do like an IRL events company. So I went back to consulting had never done consultingum, before I was consulting in e commerce.Um,and that was going pretty welland actually stayed working at Hillhouse Home, which is um, a team I absolutely love. They were super supportive of me both working therebut then also running Happy Medium for like the first three years of operations of Happy Medium. And I think that's another thing.
It's people have this idea that like if you're starting a company it,you have to go all in on it and well and I think you should at the same time I think it's okay to work a second job.I certainly did for a long, long time. Um,because I just like needed to pay myself something and the business couldn't support it.I don't think a lot of entrepreneurs talk about that because it's a really difficult thing to balance and you kind of at least for me like when I was working two jobs, I was like, oh my god.Does it like look like I'm not committed or whatever, but like you gotta do what you gotta do.So if you are starting something and you have another job on the side, that's totally valid.
I don't think a lot of entrepreneurs talk about that because it's a really difficult thing to balance.
You're still an entrepreneur.
You're still like building something.
and you're literally just working so hard to make it happen.
And that's so admirable.
So keep going on that.
Um, but anyway, yeah, didn't have a art career, wasn't an artist, all of this stuff and 边做边学you just learn as you go.
And I think that's totally great.
再次反常识说明跨行的优势and it gives you a different perspective that maybe somebody else doesn't have.
So don't let not having a career in the industry you want to build a business in stop you from building a business.
