Lawrence Carroll
劳伦斯·卡罗尔（Lawrence Carroll），1954年出生于澳大利亚，1958年随父母移民到美国，现生活和工作于纽约与威尼斯。在30岁以前卡罗尔一直靠从事其他职业维持生计（包括厨师和大厦管理员），直到1988年在纽约举办第一次个展。并从此展开他的职业艺术生涯。

Q:你从什么时候开始想要成为艺术家的？
A:在我很小的时候，我特别爱做梦。我父亲在一个仓库后面的电话公司工作，他经常把成箱的过期订单带回家，这些订单背面是空白的，我就有了无限量供应的画纸，所以我不停的画画。绘画自然而然的变成我生活里不可或缺的一部分.
Q:从某种意义上说，画画能让我从现实世界中消失，我喜欢那种感觉，虽然当时我还不知道这感觉会将我带往何处。
A:我个人并不认识有哪个艺术家会整天呆在工作室里画画，我甚至不知道艺术家到底是什么。高中毕业后的一年，我去上了专科学校，我开始认识到一种全新的可能性，感谢我遇到的几位好老师，我的人生就此改变。专科学校毕业后，我有幸被一所离家很近的私立艺术学院录取，我对艺术的兴趣更浓厚了，但我对今后仍然没有十足的把握。
就在我第二个女儿将要出生的那年，我从艺术学院毕业然后回了家。我成为一幢有32间房间的公寓大楼的管理者，为了赚钱养家我什么事都得干。
记得有一天，我在公寓储藏室里看到有一面白墙，就钉了几幅画在墙上。我对那天印象深刻，我就坐在那欣赏那些画，周遭是如此寂静，我就那么坐着，想着我是如何完成这一切的。我记得自己不无害羞的说道，“你可以的"。那一刻是如此美好，我永远难以忘怀。我就是在那时决定了要当一个艺术家。当时的我还完全不知道这条路将通向何处，会有多么艰辛，又有多么快乐，我只知道我就是一个艺术家。
Q:是什么给与你灵感？
A:我真希望我能够回答这个问题。有些时候我毫无头绪，但我每天一睁眼就开始寻找灵感。有些时候它就那么降临了，有些时候它远在天边。在任何事物上你都能得到灵感，这难免令人生畏。
几年前，我单独驾车从西岸到东岸横穿美国，一年里有四次，并没有事先做过计划。我只是四处漂流，我喜欢那种感觉。我这么做有几个理由，最重要的是我需要重新整理心境，以便接受新的事物。我拍了几百张照片，随意的做一些笔记，画一些速写，在美国的乡间小道上开了几千英里，我跟陌生人聊天，问他们对我接下来去哪有什么建议，附近又有什么值得一看。
我有意的避开走洲际公路，因为我想走得慢一些，多看一些风景，并把剩下的燃油带回工作室，看看能用它做出些什么。美国的乡村小镇和乡间公路让我有机会看到和听到一些东西，我将他们存起来，随时备用。我现在也无法确切说出这些公路旅行究竟给我了什么，也许我想要的就是那种漂流的感觉，而那就是当时在工作室进行创作的我所需要的：随作品漂流，放空，以一些别的东西来重新填满。
Q:如果你能拥有任一件现当代艺术家的作品，你想要什么？
A:威廉·德·库宁的《愚人村新闻》(Gotham News, 1955)。
Q:你现在在进行什么创作？
A:我在布置新的工作室，对我来说也不是新鲜事了，因为过去的27年里我平均两三年就要搬一次工作室。有时候搬起来很容易，有时候则不是。我目前非常忙碌。我刚开始创作一些新的油画，还不知道最终会是怎样。我有很多本速写本，它们能激发灵感，但只有真的着手开始画，我才直到想要画什么，除此以外没有捷径。
到2016年为止我都没有在画廊办展的预定，所以我有更多时间游荡，我很享受那种感觉。
Q:在艺术创作之余，你喜欢干什么？
A:因为工作的关系，我和我夫人有幸经常旅行到世界各地，我们和很多有趣的人成为了朋友。因为我们经常不是在路上就是在城市里，所以我们很享受大自然，比如散步和远足，这也是清空再装填头脑的一种方式。
我热爱阅读和音乐。一个完美的夜晚总是与家人朋友相伴，有美食美酒，和有趣的谈话——还有什么更美好的呢？
