Yunnan has all types of ecosystems except desert and ocean ecosystems on the Earth. From northwest Yunnan to southeast Yunnan, the relative elevation could reach as high as 6663.6 meters. The landscape and climate are so different in this region that could be equivalent to that from Hainan Island to Heilongjiang Province, and the water gradient is similar from the southeast coast to northwest Gansu, Qinghai area, which across the whole country.

The territory of Yunnan accounts only for 4.1% of China but ranks first in the number and species in the whole country. Yunnan happens to be at the junction of three natural geographic regions with obvious differences, its unique ecological advantages, and unique geographical and climatic characteristics making it one of the country's 17 key areas for biodiversity.

In Yunnan, there are magnificent mountains and rivers, beautiful natural scenery, as well as high mountains covered with snow all year round located at the southern end of the northern hemisphere. There is the largest tropical rainforest area nearby the Tropic of Cancer, steep and deep canyons, the Three Parallel Rivers Protected Areas, well-developed typical Karst landforms, and various highland lakes, thus making Yunnan a museum of natural scenery.

Yunnan actually offers many flowers for European Flower Market. Plant gatherers from all over the world have come to China to collect flower germplasm resources since the 16th century. For example, camellia was first introduced to Japan from Cangshan Mountain in Dali, Yunnan Province in the 14th century, then introduced to Europe in the 17th century. The most famous flowers like Rhododendron, lily, and meconopsis in Europe mainly came from Yulong Snow Mountain in Lijiang and Gaoligong Mountain in Western Yunnan.

The meconopsis was known as the “Alpine peony”. There are a total of 79 species of meconopsis at present, among them, Yunnan boasts as high as 17 species of it. Most of the meconopsis flowers only bloom once a lifetime, and some bloom will take up to 10 years in such an extreme climate and living conditions.
