At the southern foot of Shengying Peak in Cangshan Mountain, Dali, there is a well-known Nunnery - the Jizhao Nunnery. The nunnery gets its name from a Chinese verse“feeling and then understanding, tranquility, and reflecting”. It was built in the early Ming Dynasty but later destroyed, and was rebuilt later under the auspices of Tang Jiyao, the governor of Yunnan. The three characters "Jizhao Nunnery" on the entrance are inscribed by him.

Follow the path to the Nunnery, hugged by tranquility and elegance and surrounded by birds' twitter and the fragrance of flowers, one will have a deep understanding of the classical Chinese poetry "A winding footpath leads to deep retreat; the abbot's cell is hidden' mid flowers sweet."

Unlike most of the nunneries which are built with magnificent glow and exuberant incense, with simple construction and compact layout, the Jizhao Nunnery presents a unique feature: only smelling the fragrance of flowers but not the incense. Stepping into the threshold of the nunnery, you will see different kinds of flowers and plants on both sides, especially the succulents everywhere.

People once asked why dose the nunnery used flowers to worship Buddha, and Master Miaohui, the abbot of Jizhao Nunnery responded that your respect for the Buddha does not depend on how many incense sticks you offer but on how sincere and kind your heart is. Because the Buddha lacks for nothing, and your sincere heart is more precious than everything.

Although it has become a popular spot on the Internet, the familiarity of Dali locals with Jizhao Nunnery lies more in its vegetarian food. There is nothing mysterious about the food here but the fresh and tasty materials, which were prepared by the monks every morning. Adhere to the concept of more vegetables and less meat, the Jizhao Nunnery was open to the public as always.

Today’s Jizhao Nunnery was designed by the architect Mr.Gao Ludong, and was reconstructed on the original foundations. Its interior decoration is also made of some ancient materials, which reveals a traditional but cozy and simple Zen-like design, and it is reputed as "the most beautiful Nunnery in China".

The Nunnery is surrounded by flourishing green pines and ancient cypresses and wrapped by smog, which is regarded as a pure place for Buddhists. With freshness and elegance filling the Nunnery, it interprets the real poetic and picturesque splendor of life.
