英语中，缩略语通常分为两大类——
abbreviation和acronym。尽管我们在汉语中均翻译为“缩写”，但实际上，这两者是有所差别的。因此，在步入正题前，让我们先对此加以辨析。
abbreviation
A shortened form of a written word, phrase or name used in place of the whole.
abbreviation一般指将单词缩写为较短的形式。例如：‘Dr.’ for Doctor, ‘Mr.’ for Mister, ‘gym’ for gymnastics, 'Tim' for Timothy。
acronym
A word which is formed from the first letters of other words, and which is pronounced as a full word.
acronym 则是指“首字母缩写”，即由一个特定词汇取首字母而形成的一个新的单词，一般为专有名词。例如：APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation 亚太经贸合作组织), LA (Los Angeles 洛杉矶)。
