BIOGRAPHY
Zheng Liu
Zheng Liu is President's Chair Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his BSc in Physics from Nankai University in 2005 and his PhD in Physics from the National Centre for Nanoscience and Technology in 2010, and worked as a research scientist at Rice University before joining NTU in 2013.
His work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence and materials research and development. Since 2020 he has built a programme in machine-learning-guided synthesis, closed-loop experimentation and materials foundation models, spanning transition metal dichalcogenides, carbon quantum dots, high-entropy alloys and nickel-based superalloys for laser powder bed fusion. He is Co-PI of MATAI, an AI Singapore programme developing a generalist AI platform for materials discovery. In parallel he leads work on wafer-scale growth of single-crystal two-dimensional semiconductors and their integration into transistors, memory and photonic devices, and on atomic-scale electrocatalyst design for hydrogen production and CO2 conversion.
He has published over 400 peer-reviewed papers, including in Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Electronics, Nature Catalysis and Nature Synthesis, attracting more than 80,000 citations at an h-index of 142. He has been named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher for eight consecutive years since 2018, and received the 2023 APEC ASPIRE Prize as the first Singapore-based recipient, the Singapore Young Scientist Award in 2018 and an NRF Fellowship in 2013. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Materials Today Catalysis.
