Gotion and Volkswagen Plan €3.22 Billion Battery Investment
Chinese battery maker Gotion High-tech and Volkswagen plan to invest about €3.2 billion in battery and materials projects across Europe and North Africa.

Gotion plans to establish three joint ventures with Volkswagen in Spain, Slovakia and Morocco, according to a filing released Monday. Gotion would invest about €1.60 billion, while Volkswagen and its subsidiaries would contribute about €1.62 billion.

The Spanish venture in Valencia would have annual battery production capacity of 29.1 gigawatt-hours. Gotion would acquire a 49% stake through a capital increase in PowerCo Spain, while Volkswagen's battery business would retain control.

In Kenitra, Morocco, the partners plan a facility capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of lithium iron phosphate cathode materials a year. Gotion would hold 51% of that venture.

The investment agreement has yet to be signed, and the joint-venture plan remains subject to shareholder approval and government clearances in China and overseas.

The planned investment comes as Gotion gains market share in the global EV battery industry.
