With original public‑access data released by INEGI and AMDA, MEXCHAMcompleted an independent analysis covering Mexico light‑vehicle market and Chinese OEM performance in 1H 2026.
Let's review how Chinese car brands performed in Mexico during 1H 2026.
From January to June 2026, Mexico’s light‑vehicle market hit 754,394 units, up 5.3% year‑on‑year and marking a new record for first‑half sales. When including AMDA’s estimates for brands that do not report to INEGI, Chinese‑brand sales totalled 137,525 units. This represents a 27.7% year‑on‑year increase and a 17% market share, outperforming the overall local market.
It is worth noting the difference in data reporting. Brands such as BYD and GAC do not share sales figures with INEGI. Per AMDA estimates, BYD was the top‑selling Chinese brand in 1H 2026. Among brands submitting data to INEGI, MG Motor claimed the top spot.
There is a clear gap in performance across Chinese brands. Geely, Changan and Jetour saw solid growth, while JAC, Great Wall Motor and Foton recorded lower sales compared with the same period last year.
Behind these encouraging headline numbers lie critical policy dynamics. Mexico rolled out import tariffs up to 50% for light vehicles starting 2026. A notable portion of first‑half sales came from inventory imported in late 2025 before tariffs took effect. While this delivered short‑term gains, it also signals upcoming headwinds for the market.
To counter tariff‑driven challenges, Chinese automakers are ramping‑up local manufacturing footprint across Mexico. Multiple companies are advancing knock‑down (KD) assembly projects to satisfy USMCA rules‑of‑origin, cut import‑related costs and build a more sustainable position in Mexico and wider North America.
Overall, 1H 2026 presents a mixed window of opportunity and risk for Chinese auto players in Mexico. While overall market share expands rapidly, performance varies widely from brand to brand. Growth was partly fuelled by pre‑tariff inventory, making local manufacturing the key to long‑term competitiveness.
