Chinese Delivery Uniform Won a French Design Award — Here’s the Story Behind It

The orange-and-black uniform on a delivery rider might not be something you look at twice. This one has made it onto a design-award stage in Paris.

Taobao Shangou’s City Rider uniform received gold at the 2026 French Design Award ceremony on September 19, according to Xinhuanet. The delivery platform introduced the uniform in August 2025.

What is different about it?      

In a September 22 report, Shandian News spoke with a rider and examined the design. Its racing-inspired cut is fitted rather than loose, intended to keep fabric from flapping or catching on handlebars.

The orange-and-black colour scheme is paired with reflective strips, designed to make riders easier to spot in low light.

There are also details you might miss at the door: a small medical kit in the waist pouch for minor injuries, and a sleeve pocket reserved for an emergency information card, so someone helping a rider can contact their family.

The idea behind the uniform

Lead designer Yang Tao told Xinhuanet that the team wanted delivery riders to have a recognisable professional outfit, much as chefs and flight attendants do.

The team itself was unconventional: its members included people from restaurants and bars, as well as a former dancer.

Award committee chair Dario Olivero highlighted the uniform’s role in giving riders a clear professional identity and making their work more visible to the public.
