US Battery Startup Prepares for Mass Production in China
US battery startup EnerVenue, which scrapped plans to make Kentucky the site of its first factory, has instead built it in China.

The company's Changzhou facility is scheduled to start mass production on Thursday, Reuters reported Tuesday. The plant is around 95% automated and is expected to employ about 400 workers by the end of the year.

Chief Executive Henning Rath said the decision to manufacture in China rather than the US was driven by skills and supply chain depth, particularly in Changzhou, which bills itself as China's "new energy capital."

Without building in China, Rath said, it would be "very difficult with the capital available" to prove the manufacturing process at a commercial scale.

EnerVenue announced its Kentucky factory plan in 2023, with an initial investment of $264 million, but abandoned it the following year.

Founded by Stanford materials scientist Yi Cui, EnerVenue makes nickel-hydrogen batteries derived from technology NASA used in space. It raised more than $300 million in a March funding round led by Full Vision Capital, with other investors including Saudi Aramco and SLB.
