When you are feeling tired all day, chances are you need a vacation. What better place to clear your mind than with nature? I just came back from a tour to Massachusetts Maine. We went to Mystic aquarium, Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, the Portland Head Tower, and York’s Wild Kingdom.
My mom, dad, and I woke up at 5 on the first day in order to pick up some friends and catch the bus to New York. I was extremely tired, and once we got on the bus, I immediately fell asleep. After an hour’s drive, we got off at Chinatown and boarded the tour bus that was waiting for us. The bus was a large white coach, and I laughed when I saw that the license plate read BAD. Then, a tall man with a grey suit and a matching beard greeted us. “Hi! Goin’ to Maine?” he asked cheerfully. We nodded our heads. He took our suitcases and stored them in the baggage compartment. We got on the bus. I could already tell that this was going to be fun.
Our tour guide introduced himself as David, and the tall man in the suit as David, the bus driver. Everyone laughed at this. He explained our route and listed all the stops we would make.
Our first stop was Mystic Aquarium. We learned that the town of Mystic was named after the Native American word, Missi-tuk, which describes the river that runs through the town. Once we got our tickets from David, we streamed off the bus and into the aquarium. In the main lobby, the walls are lined with sculptures of marine animals. But when we took a closer look, we saw that it was made entirely out of recyclables! There was a gigantic jellyfish made of Gatorade bottles and a whale ribcage made of Kleenex bottles and milk jugs. I thought it was very creative and thoughtful.
We went into a theater, and we saw a show with California sea lions. It was about an ocean preservation organization training new recruits and their sea lions, and one of them was evil and wanted to sabotage the master computer. In the end, she grows attached to her sea lion partner and joins the association to protect him.
After the show, we visited some of the exhibits. My mom wanted to see the beluga whales, so we went there first. The beluga whales were big, white, and wrinkly. They had a big bubble-like thing on their head. Sometimes, they swam across the length of the glass tank and everyone could take a nice picture, but usually, they just swim in a circle around the tank. While my mom was taking pictures, a little kid started blowing bubbles on the glass of the tank with a bubble gun. One of the belugas was interested, and he swam right up to the glass and watched the kid! It was so adorable.
Next, we went to the Pacific Northwest exhibit. We saw a few furry fat brown seals swimming among rocks and a step-by-step walkthrough on how they train their seals. Past that was the Penguin Pavilion. They had a dozen or so tiny African Penguins. They were especially cute when they swim above the surface of the smooth water and shake their tail feathers. We followed a path downstairs to take pictures of the adorable penguins underwater. I caught a great one of my mom as a few swam by the glass.
Once we explored the outside exhibits, we went inside to see all the fish. I found a fat, blobby blue fish and a goblin-nosed blue fish to be my favorites. There were fish from all kinds of ecosystems; pink and yellow fish from the rivers, striped multi-colored fish from Africa, and rainbows of fish from the Pacific. The big tanks held the bigger species, like sharks up to five feet long, sting rays wider than a car tire, and barracudas. There was set of tanks that I really loved: the jellyfish exhibit. There were all kinds of jellies, from small to huge, and many different colors. My favorite was a red, glowing one about seven inches wide. The aquarium was really fun and I was a bit sad to leave.
After that, we took a long drive to cover most of the distance to Maine and get to our hotel. It has started raining on the way, and when we got there, David had to put on a poncho to get our suitcases from under the bus. Meanwhile, the other David checked us in and distributed out room cards. We entered our room, did our night routines, and went to bed.
The next day, we woke up at six-thirty, got dressed, and ate breakfast at the inn. At seven, we got on the bus to drive to Cadillac Mountain and Acadia National Park. David told us that this Mountain was the first place to see the sun rise in the US, but once we started going up the mountain, the bus got engulfed by clouds and fog. When we got to the top, we couldn’t see twenty feet in front of us! When we got to the top, David told us that you could buy blueberry soda here, and it was exclusive to Maine. When our group got off the bus and spread out, my mom took some pictures of the flowers, rocks, and scenery on the mountain, as we couldn’t see the view from the top. Then, she and her friend took pictures of each other in many poses. Once they got bored of that, we went to the souvenir shop to get my dad and sister a gift, as well as two bottles of blueberry soda.
After the mountain, we went to Bar Harbor, a harbor off the coast of Acadia National Park. We were all so excited because we were going to go whale watching. Chatter filled the bus as David said he was going to retrieve our tickets. After a few minutes, though, David came back. “I’m sorry everybody, but we can’t go whale watching anymore.” The crowd groaned “The officials said that the sea is too rough for whale watching, but they said we could go on a nature tour on boat.” We cheered. David also told us that we could eat lobster at lunch at a nearby restaurant at lunch, as well as lobster cakes.
After we got our tickets and got off the bus, my mom went straight to the lobster cake booth. She bought one, and she took a bite. She offered me, but because I don’t really like lobster, I declined. It was basically pieces of lobster with dressing in a bun about the size of a hot dog bun, but it cost fourteen dollars! I was so surprised, and I felt that it was right for me to take a bite of this expensive treat.
Once we got on the boat, my mom took a seat on the upper deck to finish the lobster cake. I explored the ship and found it quite small. Once the ship started moving, a lady started talking on the microphone, saying that she will be our guide for the trip. First, we sailed along the coast, and she explained that many famous people built beach houses here and named some of the inns and houses and told us which family each used to belong to. I only recognized one name though, and it was Astor.
Next, we sailed past a few islands, and civilization slowly faded away. While the lady was explaining the surrounding environment, someone caught a glimpse of a fin. The microphone lady also saw this, and she told us that the creature was a sunfish, sunbathing on the surface. It looked like a dark blue circle in the water, and occasionally a fin would surface. After that, the lady said that we would be going a bit faster to get to a more remote island in the harbor. As we picked up speed, I took a seat in the back because I wanted to see the churning water behind the boat. I liked the look of the foamy trail the boat left behind. But I got a neat surprise. When the propellers were at full speed, it could kick up mist and send it onto the boat. I sat there with mist all around me and the breeze of the sea, and it was so cool. Eventually, I got bored, and walked along the side of the boat to watch the bow cut through the water. Little did I know, the bow could also kick waves up, and the first time I got splashed by ice cold water I was so surprised. But it felt good, so I stayed there.
After about thirty minutes, we slowed down and pulled up next to a small island. It was very rocky and had no trees on it. A flock of seagulls was sitting on the island, and there were also these big brown shiny blobs among the rocks. The lady explained that the island is a great the nesting ground for seagulls and that the brown blobs were actually seals! She also told us to look in the sea because some seals were in the water. While we were looking, the boat drifted around the island. Eventually, we were downwind of the island and everyone could smell the stench of bird poop. Definitely not something I want to describe! Anyway, we kept watching for seals, and suddenly, a seal jumped completely out of the water like one of the trained ones we saw at the aquarium. The lady told us that when a seal puts its head above the water, it’s called a partial breach and when it jumps completely out of the water, it’s called a full breach.
We sailed to another island nearby, one with a lighthouse. Seagulls swarmed the island and a big bird of some sort was sitting on the top of the lighthouse. The lady told us that there used to be people on the island and they scared off the seagulls with shotguns, but now that the lighthouse is self-operated, the island became another breeding ground for seagulls. Then she told us that the big bird was a bald eagle, about five years old. Some seagulls were trying to attack it, but the eagle just scared them off.
We visited a few more islands and the lady pointed out things like how the cliffs were made, the different levels of stone, and the vegetation. On one of the islands there was an eagle at the top of one of the tall trees surveying its surroundings. This was pointed out by the lady and everyone thought it was a majestic bird.
The rest of the boat ride was pretty much like that, and soon we came back to the harbor. It was late in the afternoon, so we went to the restaurant. It looked like Red Lobster, and the food there was also alike to it. Once our food came, my mom and her friend took a lot of pictures, some goofy some serious. When we finally started eating, everyone loved their food and it was a pleasant lunch.
After we ate, we took a stroll in the park. We took a lot of pictures of each other and of the beautiful park. The park had a big field that opens up to the sea, some bushes with flowers, a gazebo, a pair of fake cannons, and a nice path. By the time it was time to get on the bus, we’d taken so many photos I couldn’t count them. When we got to our hotel, we got KFC for dinner and went to bed.
On the third day, we left for the zoo, and then the long drive back to New York. The zoo, called York’s Wild Kingdom, had two sections; a zoo and an amusement park, but our tickets only let us go to the zoo part. When we got there, it was drizzling a bit, but no one seemed to mind. They were all pumped to see the animals. Near the entrance, the first set of exhibits was baboons. There was a pair of golden-furred monkeys, a mother and a kid, and one black one, probably the father. There was also a cage with some grey baboons with large mouths. There was a large, flat cylinder thing half in, have out of the cage, and they were spinning them.
Behind them, there was a bridge, so we went on it. The wooden bridge arced over a lake, and at the sides people were feeding ducks. On the other side of the bridge, there was a feeding pen for goats. Little candy machines sold tiny treats for the animals, a quarter for a handful. There was a white spotted goat that was really cute, especially when it shook to get the rain off of it.
There was a toucan, a few capybaras, a reptile hut, several peacocks, even a pair of swans. The best animals there, though, were the tigers. There was a Bengal tiger lying in one cage and a Siberian tiger in another. They walked around so elegantly, with a fierce look on their faces. My mom’s friend joked by slapping his belly and saying, “Fresh meat! Come and get it!”
In the back of the zoo, there was a butterfly tent. It was great to get out of the rain, but also beautiful inside. There were many flowers and a small pond in the tent. Butterflies floated around everywhere; from big blue ones to small yellow ones. There also were some tiny insects, and I got bit by a few. It kind of pissed me off, but the place was still pretty cool. In the pond, there was another swan, I don’t know why, but it was there.
Once we finished taking pictures of butterflies, we went to the snack bar to get lunch. We ate hot dogs and a Philly cheese steak. Then, it was time to go home. The trip really cleared my mind, and I felt great afterward. I’d definitely want to do this again.
