Would You Drink Coffee in a Pigsty? China’s “Pigsty Café” Goes Viral

A café built inside a former pigsty has become an unexpected social media hit in southern China.

Located in Kuishan Village, Xingye County, Guangxi, the aptly named “Pigsty Coffee” keeps much of the original structure intact—including old rammed-earth walls, cracked cement partitions and seating placed inside the former pig pens.

From pig pen to viral café

The café opened at a rural tourist attraction near Yulin around May this year.

According to scenic-area staff, it attracted little attention at first. But after visitors and content creators began posting videos, the unusual setting quickly went viral.

Related videos have reportedly received more than 60,000 likes and been shared over 740,000 times.

Some viewers praised the creative reuse of an old rural building. Others joked that they could sense the “fenwei gan” even through their screens.

The phrase is a Chinese pun: 氛围感 (fenwei gan) means “atmosphere,” while replacing its first character with 粪 changes the meaning to something closer to “a poop-filled atmosphere.”

But does it actually smell?

Despite its appearance, staff insist that customers will not be drinking coffee beside fresh manure—or any pigs.

They said the former pigsty had been washed and disinfected several times before opening. Multiple layers of sealing treatment were also applied to the old walls.

According to the staff, there is no longer any pig smell inside the café.

The venue’s rough walls and unmistakable pig-pen layout have now become its biggest attraction, giving visitors something few polished urban cafés can offer: proof that they really had coffee in a pigsty.

Would you give it a try?
