EU Asks China to Voluntarily Limit Hybrid Car Exports
The European Union has asked China to voluntarily restrict exports of hybrid cars as part of a deal to prevent a trade war.

Brussels wants Beijing to curb shipments or face higher tariffs, the Financial Times reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.

"If they will not limit their exports to our market then we will," said an EU official. "This is about stopping deindustrialisation. We have to act. It's about managed trade."

Brussels is seeking a commitment from Beijing to restrict sales of China-made hybrid vehicles to about 15% the EU market compared with more than a third today, the people said.

Chinese-made hybrids face the EU's standard 10% import tariff, while battery-electric cars are subject to combined duties of up to about 45% following the introduction of additional anti-subsidy tariffs in October 2024. Carmakers including Volkswagen have called for similarly punitive duties on hybrid imports.

The EU set an October deadline in June for tangible progress in reducing its trade imbalance with China. Trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is expected to visit Beijing next month, with Brussels also seeking restraint on Chinese exports in sectors including chemicals and increased purchases of European goods.
