Professor Hongbiao Dong FREng is the 125th Anniversary Chair , Professor of Materials Engineering at the University of Birmingham, Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Transformation of the Metals Industry (DigitalMetal), and Co-Director of the UKRI IGNITE Sustainable Manufacturing Hub. A Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, he is internationally recognised for research in solidification, data-driven modelling, advanced manufacturing, welding and additive manufacturing, and the application of digital technologies and artificial intelligence to materials processing. He has published more than 270 peer-reviewed journal papers and developed technologies with significant industrial impact, particularly in aerospace and steel manufacturing. Professor Dong leads major UK and international research programmes and works closely with academic and industrial partners to translate fundamental research into practical solutions. He is also President of the Association of British Chinese Professors (ABCP), actively promoting international academic and industrial collaboration, particularly between the UK and China, and supporting the development of the next generation of researchers and engineers.
