From 15 September, MSC will apply two additional charges on selected shipments from Asia to ports in the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea:
— Piracy Risk Surcharge: $55 per TEU
— Suez Canal Surcharge: $36 per TEU
Together, the new charges amount to $91 per TEU, or $182 for a standard 40-foot container, on top of other freight rates and applicable surcharges.
MSC says the move reflects the continuing security and piracy risks around the Arabian Peninsula, which are still affecting vessel operations and routing decisions. The surcharges will remain in place until further notice.
The announcement comes as MSC cautiously increases its use of the Suez route. Following a security and operational review, the carrier said it would return a limited number of East–West services to the canal, including selected Asia–Mediterranean, Asia–Northern Europe and India–Mediterranean sailings.
The return will be gradual and service-specific, with contingency routings remaining available if security conditions deteriorate.
Piracy concerns are also becoming more prominent again. According to the IMO, 24 attempted or actual incidents of piracy and armed robbery were recorded in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden over a three-month period reported in July. At that time, 44 seafarers were still being held aboard three hijacked vessels.
For shippers, the gradual return to Suez may offer shorter transit times — but it also comes with an additional security premium.
