Immersive Goldfish Theater

Superlatives such as ‘best,’ ‘greatest’ and ‘strangest’ are frowned upon in journalism. Sometimes, however, restraint does a disservice to the passions of the moment.

All three adjectives certainly sprang to mind at the Immersive Goldfish Theater, which opened at the Bund Finance Center (BFC) on August 6, 2026, where it will remain until December 31, 2026.

A different kettle of fish from anything you’ll experience in Shanghai — or anywhere else, for that matter.

Visitors wander through a succession of rooms stacked with staged fish tanks, each more fantastical than the last, making the experience more art exhibition than theatrical performance — but calling the attraction a ‘goldfish theater’ rather than a ‘goldfish exhibition’ is a charming conceit, casting the fish as its principal players.

The pop-up pairs China’s 1,000-year-old obsession with goldfish with cutting edge technology for a sensory overload. Dive in and you’ll discover a newfound appreciation for the beauty of goldfish and its place in Chinese history.

The fish weren’t the only ones gawping: the artistry and diversity of the fish tank fabrications rendered us speechless.

TIME OUT TIP

Goldfish breeding is serious cultural business: traditional techniques in Fujian and Shaanxi are recognised as intangible cultural heritage (ICH).

Endemic to China, the goldfish or jīnyú (金鱼) owes its name and signature golden hue to a thousand years of selective breeding. Gold, however, is only the beginning: the Immersive Goldfish Theater houses more than 200 varieties, some of them all-white, jet-black, blazing red, soft pink, polka-dotted… you get the gist. Some have shimmering skirts, others bulging eyes, and all know how to work a room.

Redolent of a lifesized jewellery box, our favourite room is flanked by glittering invidivual tanks, each containing no more than two fish.

Unlike the cavernous communal tanks elsewhere, where individual fish can get drowned out amid the lights and spectacle, this room is hushed and contemplative, encouraging you to get up close to the little guys.

For all its obvious potential as a spectacular social media backdrop, the Immersive Goldfish Theater also gives continuity to traditional knowledge systems.

Plaques — predominantly in Chinese — are thoughtfully positioned throughout the rooms for those seeking more textbook-style knowledge. We’re petitioning for this to be a permanent attraction in Shanghai!
