What would it look like if the China Europe freight train could carry passengers? A train journey across the Eurasian continent may not be as distant as we imagine.
A few days ago, I was chatting with a friend and asked, "If the China Europe freight train can accommodate passengers, would you like to take it? Isn't it exciting to think about taking the train to Europe.
My friend smiled and said that it reminded him of the book "Journey to the West" he read when he was a child, where Tang Monk and his disciples traveled to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures for fourteen years. If I could take a train to the "Western Heaven" (where Tang Monk went to retrieve Buddhist scriptures) now, it would only take about fourteen days.
According to research, the China Europe freight train departs from Chongqing and arrives in Duisburg, Germany, covering a total distance of about 11000 kilometers, passing through Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, and finally entering German territory.
In theory, the entire journey takes 15-20 days, with an average daily travel of six to seven hundred kilometers, which is equivalent to running the distance from Beijing to Shanghai every day for half a month. It may not be as fast as airplanes, but it is much faster than sea freight. The most touching thing is the gradual change of scenery along the way: from the Gobi Desert in the hinterland of Asia, crossing the majestic Ural Mountains, and then entering the vast Eastern European Plain, the terrain and scenery flow layer by layer, full of the romance of a unique land journey.
Returning to reality, this trip has many obstacles.
The first challenge is obtaining a visa. This route passes through 5 countries, and Schengen visas can only cover the latter half of Europe. Kazakhstan and Russia also need to apply for separate visas, complete the necessary procedures, and the documentation is a significant burden.
Second reality: The essence of the China Europe freight train is freight trains, without passenger carriages, sleeper cars, or dining cars. Even if people are allowed to board the train, they can only stay in a sealed container without windows, seats, and sanitation facilities. Ventilation and warmth are difficult to ensure, making it completely unsuitable for passengers to ride.
I think this train will definitely become a popular internet celebrity.
Imagine: Starting from Chongqing, on the first day, I was still eating hotpot and enjoying the night view of the mountain city. On the third day, outside the window was already a vast desert. On the seventh day, the train passed through the Ural Mountains, and the boundary between the Eurasian continent was right at its feet. On the tenth day, entering the Eastern European plain, endless wheat fields and windmills spread out on the earth. On the fifteenth day, upon arriving in Duisburg, the Rhine River shimmered with golden light under the setting sun.
This is not just a trip, it is clearly a geography class spanning two continents.
The meaning of travel has also become a slow experience. No need to chase after flight schedules, no need to queue endlessly for security checks. Although cross-border inspections are inevitable, during the rest of the time, you can stay in the observation car, read and drink tea, or chat with unfamiliar travel companions casually, letting the mainland scenery slowly recede from the window.
Speaking of which, there are actually international passenger trains between China and Russia. The K3 train travels 7692 kilometers from Beijing to Moscow, taking 6 days. It is known as the "first train in China" and has been running for more than 60 years since its opening in 1959.

However, this train is taking the Trans Siberian Railway, with a northern route and does not pass through the southern line of the China Europe Railway. And the ticket price is not cheap, even ordinary shops cost thousands of yuan, and the price is even higher than discounted tickets.
But the existence of K3 at least indicates that railway passenger transportation on the Eurasian continent is technically feasible.
The real problem lies in the commercial value. Airplanes have already taken "fast arrival" to the extreme, and trains can only compete with "experience" itself. The exact number of tourists willing to pay for this slow experience is still unknown.
At the end of the conversation, I asked my friend, "If there really was this train, would you take it
He thought for a moment and said, "Yes, but maybe only once. Not for anything else, just to watch a desert sunset on the train and take a photo in front of the Eurasian boundary marker. These experiences will never be obtained by flying
I thought for a moment, it seems like it's the same.
Some scenery can only be brought to you by slow trains; In some distant places, only when the wheels run inch by inch over the railway tracks can we truly arrive.
The China Europe freight train still only transports goods, and manned travel is just a beautiful imagination. But this imagination itself is romantic enough. Who can be certain that the future will not come true? One of the most romantic things in the world is to take a train, cross the entire continent, and travel to a completely unfamiliar land.
And all we need is a ticket and a heart willing to slow down.
