摘要:We investigate why inventors choose specific collaborators and how different collaboration patterns shape the relationship between network stability and exploratory innovation in interdisciplinary contexts. Using nanoenergy patents (1998-2021) from the Derwent World Patent Index, we find that collaboration network stability hinders exploratory innovation, and this effect is moderated by assortativity. We classify collaborations into two types based on inventors' assortativity and network location: high assortativity collaboration, where core (peripheral) inventors work with others in similar locations, and low assortativity collaboration, where inventors collaborate across different network locations. We further examine how these collaborations influence the impact mechanism, challenging the conventional assumption of core-core collaboration. Robustness tests, including narrowed sample windows and alternative variable measures, confirm the consistency of results. Our findings provide nuanced insights into how partner selection and collaboration structures affect exploratory innovation, offering practical guidance for managers seeking to design effective collaboration strategies in technology-driven and interdisciplinary organizations.

数字驱动的可持续发展:数字化在新兴经济体环境违规行为治理中的作用

摘要:Despite increasing scholarly interest in digitalization for enhancing corporate performance and sustainability, theoretical and empirical research on its potential to deter firms' environmental misconduct remains limited. To address this gap, in this article, we employ dynamic capability theory to examine the impact of digitalization on reducing environmental misconduct, along with the moderating effects of returnee directors and market competition. Leveraging a longitudinal dataset of 4234 Chinese-listed firms (2009-2022), we reveal a robust negative association between digitalization and environmental misconduct. In addition, returnee directors and intense market competition amplify this deterrence effect, underscoring the interplay between technological capabilities and institutional governance. The findings remain robust across various alternative measures and endogeneity tests, including the Heckman two-stage model, propensity score matching, and a two-year lagged approach. Overall, this study extends digitalization and corporate governance literature in the environmental management context by offering fresh insights into the relationship between digitalization and environmental misconduct in emerging economies.

标题:Expanding Firms' Innovation Boundaries: The Role of Suppliers' Breakthrough Green Innovation and Digitalization

摘要:Amid the urgent need for a global sustainability transition, overcoming path dependence and expanding firms' innovation boundaries have become central challenges in advancing the green economy. This study examines whether suppliers' breakthrough green innovation can expand downstream firms' innovation boundaries through supply chain relationships and how digitalization shapes this process. Using data on Chinese A-share listed firms from 2000 to 2020, we examine the relationship between suppliers' breakthrough green innovation and downstream firms' innovation boundary expansion, as well as the moderating role of digitalization. The findings indicate that suppliers' breakthrough green innovation significantly expands downstream firms' innovation boundaries, and that this result remains robust after a series of endogeneity checks and robustness tests. Mechanism analysis indicates that this effect operates mainly through two market-based forces: pricing traction and cost pressure. Further results reveal that digitalization positively moderates this impact. This study provides new evidence on the supply chain transmission of breakthrough green innovation and highlights the critical role of digitalization, offering practical implications for engineering managers and policymakers seeking to develop digitally empowered green supply chain governance.

摘要:In the face of escalating environmental challenges and growing regulatory and stakeholder pressures, improving firms' environmental performance has become an essential strategic objective. Digital technologies (DTs) are increasingly viewed as transformative tools that can support firms in achieving sustainability goals. However, despite growing interest, existing empirical evidence on the impact of DTs deployment on environmental performance remains fragmented and inconclusive. Moreover, limited empirical research has examined how DTs interact with human-centered production systems, such as lean management, to shape environmental outcomes. Addressing these gaps, this study draws on the natural-resource-based view to investigate whether and how DTs deployment enhances firms' environmental performance, and how this relationship is moderated by lean production and environmental leadership. Using longitudinal data from publicly listed firms in China, our analysis reveals that DTs deployment has a significant positive effect on environmental performance, and this effect is amplified in firms exhibiting higher levels of lean production and environmental leadership. These findings remain robust across various estimation strategies, including alternative variable specifications, instrumental variable methods, Heckman two-step correction, and a quasi-natural experiment. By providing large-scale empirical evidence on the environmental implications of digital transformation and its interaction with lean practices, this study contributes to the emerging literature on Industry 4.0 and sustainable operations, offering actionable insights for managers and policymakers committed to green transition.

摘要:Existing literature on small and medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs) green innovation within sustainable supply chains often assumes a uniform adoption path, overlooking the critical role of green performance heterogeneity. This study addresses this gap by investigating how green performance levels fundamentally alter the configurational pathways to SMEs' green innovation. Grounded in a context-specific technology-organization-environment framework-integrating green technology bricolage, top management's green cognition, and network embeddedness, we triangulate data from 263 Chinese SMEs using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis and necessary condition analysis, supported by extensive robustness checks to ensure a high level of research rigor. The results reveal causal asymmetry and distinct innovation logics. For high-green performance SMEs, green innovation is primarily driven by the synergy of green technology bricolage and network embeddedness, often without high managerial cognition. Conversely, low-green performance SMEs necessitate high top management's green cognition and network embeddedness to overcome green innovation inertia. By demonstrating that SMEs' green innovation pathways are contingent on past green performance, this study resolves fragmentation in the literature and offers tailored guidance for fostering sustainability in diverse SME contexts.

智能制造能力对制造企业商业模式创新的影响
标题:The Impact of Smart Manufacturing Capabilities on Business Model Innovation in Manufacturing Enterprises

摘要:With the rapid growth of the global economy and ongoing technological advancements, smart manufacturing has become a vital force driving industrial transformation. This study investigates how smart manufacturing capability influences business model innovation (BMI) in manufacturing enterprises. It further examines the mediating role of new productive forces and the moderating effect of patient capital in this relationship. Despite the significance of smart manufacturing, existing research offers limited insight into its impact on BMI. To address this gap, this study collected data from manufacturing firms across various industries through a questionnaire survey. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling and hierarchical regression analysis. The results show that smart manufacturing capability significantly promotes BMI. This indicates that advancements in smart manufacturing can drive innovation by optimizing production processes, improving resource efficiency, and enhancing market responsiveness. Moreover, new productive forces serve as a key mediator in this relationship, suggesting that enhanced smart manufacturing capabilities improve firms' production efficiency and innovation capacity, thereby facilitating business model transformation. Patient capital also plays a significant moderating role, demonstrating that long-term resource investment and strategic persistence amplify the positive effects of smart manufacturing on innovation. To ensure the rigor of the study, four robustness checks were conducted: substitute variable tests, subsample analyses, lag effect tests, and multicollinearity diagnostics. All results confirmed the stability of the core conclusions. This study provides a new theoretical perspective on the relationship between smart manufacturing and BMI. It also offers empirical support for research on technology enablement in engineering management and provides practical guidance for the digital transformation of manufacturing enterprises.

摘要:This study explores the impact of performance feedback on digital innovation. While prior research often focuses on rational capability-based perspectives, we adopt a behavioral strategy lens to examine how performance feedback shapes digital innovation decisions. Using a sample of Chinese manufacturing firms from 2004 to 2021, we find an inverted U-shaped relationship between performance shortfalls and digital innovation, and board and CEO IT expertise flatten the inverted U-shaped curve. These findings are supported by a rigorous empirical design, including extensive potential endogeneity analysis and robustness checks. This study contributes to the literature by bridging behavioral strategy and digital innovation, offering new insights into how performance feedback, moderated by IT leadership, shapes strategic innovation decisions. It also extends the understanding of IT leadership in mitigating cognitive biases and enhancing firms' ability to respond strategically to performance signals in high-risk, long-term digital initiatives.

摘要:As the locus of value creation increasingly occurs at the interfaces among various parties, firms stress inbound innovation with supply chain partners. Complementing studies that investigate inbound innovation with supply chain partners from network and relationship perspectives, this study concentrates on the focal firms' friendly actions. Employing social exchange theory and media richness theory, this study proposes that outbound operation information sharing and IT channel diversity contribute to the firms' inbound innovation with supply chain partners. Moreover, as outbound operation information sharing, IT channel diversity, and internal R&D capability are key factors at different stages of inbound innovation with supply chain partners, this study also examines their interactive effects on inbound innovation with supply chain partners. Employing the 2012 enterprise surveys data set of China and hierarchical multiple regression, the empirical results support our arguments. Moreover, the results remain consistent throughout robustness analyses and further mechanism analyses. Our findings highlight the importance of firms' friendly actions and their complementary effects with the internal capabilities in enhancing firms' inbound innovation with supply chain partners.
