Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia erupted continuously for about 25 hours over the weekend, sending volcanic ash over Jakarta and surrounding areas. The temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport – Southeast Asia’s second-busiest airport – has caused hundreds of flight cancellations and delays. For freight forwarders and shippers, please pay close attention to the impact on air cargo operations.
🌋Flight Operations Hit Hard
According to Indonesia’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the airport closure was extended multiple times on Sunday (September 6). By 10:35 a.m. local time, at least 373 flights had been affected. At Soekarno-Hatta alone, 202 flights were impacted, including 167 cancellations. Disruptions continued into Monday, with Singapore Airlines and Scoot canceling multiple flights between Singapore and Jakarta.
⚠️How Severe Was the Impact?
Due to volcanic ash, Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport — Southeast Asia's second-busiest airport — was forced to temporarily suspend operations. Key figures:
  • 1,039 flights affected, disrupting travel for approximately 166,000 passengers
  • At Soekarno-Hatta alone, 963 flights were impacted, including 453 arrivals and 510 departures
  • A total of 8 airportsacross Indonesia were temporarily closed due to ash dispersal
  • Affected international routes included flights to Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Amsterdam, and more;Cathay Pacific Airways in Hong Kong has canceled all flights to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta scheduled for September 5–8.

  • Singapore Airlines and its budget carrier Scoot also canceled multiple flights between Singapore and Jakarta on Monday (September 7).

✈️Why Does Volcanic Ash Disrupt Flights?
Volcanic ash particles are hard and abrasive. If sucked into aircraft engines, they can cause blade wear and, in severe cases, engine failure or flameout. Ash can also affect flight instruments and cockpit visibility. For safety reasons, airports must suspend operations when ash is detected.
💬Current Status
According to Indonesia's Geological Agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the continuous eruption has ended, but volcanic activity remains elevated, with a high potential for further eruptions. The volcano remains at Level III ("Alert")status, with a 3-kilometer exclusion zonein place around the crater.
📦 Important Reminders
Expect shipment delays– With mass flight cancellations and diversions, cargo already at or destined for Jakarta will likely experience backlogs. Please inform your clients in advance.
Check shipment status– Contact your airline or ground handler immediately to confirm whether your cargo has been loaded or if re-booking is needed.
Consider alternative routing– For urgent goods, evaluate transshipment via nearby hubs like Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, or explore sea-air options – but weigh extra costs and transit times.
Monitor future risks– If volcanic activity resumes, capacity may be constrained for several days. Build buffer time into upcoming shipping schedules.
