UNIQLO (优衣库) and MUJI (无印良品) have plenty in common: Japanese roots, minimalist leanings and a loyal following in China. Now, they have something else in common — an address.
Both have boasted prominent global flagship stores on Middle Huaihai Road — one of Shanghai’s busiest shopping streets — for the better part of a decade: UNIQLO since September 30, 2013, and MUJI since December 12, 2015.
So when MUJI announced its departure from No. 755 Middle Huaihai Road earlier this March, many long-time Shanghai residents mourned the closure — but were quickly placated by a massive moving-out sale.

The bigger surprise came on August 27, when UNIQLO took to Little Red Book to release a teaser about its own move from No. 887 Middle Huaihai Road to MUJI’s old digs at No. 755 — literally a block away — with the caption, “Catch you at the next intersection!”

And because big things happen in threes: MUJI might be opening a new store in UNIQLO’s old space. Major media outlets like the Shanghai Observer, and even the Shanghai government’s official website, have repeated the market rumour.
In a nutshell:
✅ 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃: UNIQLO is moving from its current corner spot (next to South Shaanxi Road metro station) into MUJI’s old digs (near Middle Huaihai Road station). Its last day at No. 887 is October 29, before the new store swings open its doors at No. 755 on October 30, 2026.
❓ 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: MUJI 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 be moving into UNIQLO’s soon-to-be-former home — literally a block away.
Beyond the aforementioned Japanese brands, Middle Huaihai Road has recently welcomed a string of major international openings: last fall brought H&M Home, while this summer welcomed Spain’s Zara and Singapore’s Charles & Keith.
