Sometimes, the most common words in the English language can cause the most trouble.

有时候,英语中最常见的单词会带来最大的麻烦。

Today, we will talk about four adverbs that are often unclear to English learners. All four words relate to time in some way. They are "just," "already," "still" and"yet."
今天,我们将讨论英语学习者经常不清楚的四个副词。这四个词在某种程度上都与时间有关。它们是“just”、“already”、“still”和“yet”。

Just 刚刚

Let's start with the word "just." We use "just" to say that an action has happened very recently or a short time ago.

让我们从单词“just”开始。我们用“just”来表示最近或不久前发生的动作。

For example, when you heard one speaker say this:
例如,当你听到一个人这样说:
.I just saw Susan coming out of the cinema.
我刚看见苏珊从电影院出来。

The speaker means "I saw Susan coming out of the cinema a very short time ago."
说话者的意思是“我刚才看到苏珊从电影院出来了。”

How long a very short time is will depend on the situation.

这个时间有多长将视情况而定。

For example, imagine that you had been going to a university for four years and graduated a week ago. You talk to a family member and they ask what is new. You say:
例如,想象一下,你已经在一所大学读了四年,一周前才毕业。你和家人聊天,他们问有什么新鲜事。你说:

.I just graduated from college! I'm so happy to finally be done.
*我刚大学毕业! 我很高兴终于结束了。

The word "just" was correctly used here because the idea that something happened recently often depends on the time length of the action. Four years is a long time, so graduating a week ago is still very recent.
“just”这个词用在这里是正确的,因为最近发生的事情通常取决于动作的时间长度。四年是一段很长的时间,但是一周前毕业仍然是最近的事情。

Already 已经

The word "already" is different from "just."

“already”和“just”是不同的。

Already used with the present perfect means 'before now'. We use it to emphasize that something happened before something else or earlier than expected.
Already与现在完成时连用表示“现在之前”。我们用它来强调某事发生在另一件事之前或比预期更早。

For example: 例如:

·I've already spent my salary and it's two weeks before payday.

我的工资已经花完了,现在离发薪日还有两周。
Here, the speaker means "I have spent all the salary sooner than expected."
在这里,说话者的意思是“我比预期的早花光了所有的薪水。”

The speaker did not use the word"just" here because the speaker has run out of salary two weeks before payday. And, in this situation, that is not a short time ago.
说话者在这里没有使用“just”这个词,因为说话者在发薪日前两周就已经把工资花光了。在这种情况下,这不是一段时间以前。

Still 仍然

Now, we turn to the adverb"still."
现在,我们来看副词still。

Still used with the present perfect means that something hasn't happened. We use it to emphasize that we expected the thing to happen earlier. Still (in this context) is only used in negative sentences.
still表示某事还没有发生。我们用它来强调我们预期某事会更早发生。Still(在这种情况下)只用于否定句。

For example: 例如:

·I've been waiting for an hour and the bus still hasn't come.
我已经等了一个小时了,公共汽车还没来。
The speaker is saying, "I have been waiting for the bus for an hour." And, the bus probably is expected to come sooner.
说话者想说:“我已经等了一个小时的公共汽车了。”而且,巴士可能会更早到达。

Yet 然而

And, finally, we have the word "yet."

最后,我们还有“yet”这个词。
"Yet" is used for actions that someone is watching for or expecting to happen. Unlike"still," with "yet," there is no evidence that something was expected to finish sooner than now.
“Yet”用于某人正在观察或期待发生的动作。不像“still”和“yet”,没有证据表明某事会比现在更快完成。

"Yet" is used for actions that someone is watching for or expecting to happen. Unlike "still," with "yet," there is no evidence that something was expected to finish sooner than now.
“Yet”用于某人正在观察或期待发生的动作。不像“still”和“yet”,没有证据表明某事会比现在更快完成。

"Yet" is usually used in questions and negative sentences. A negative sentence is one thatcontains the word "not."
“Yet”通常用于疑问句和否定句中。否定句是包含“不”这个词的句子。

We also use "yet" in questions.

我们也在疑问句中使用yet。

For example: 例如:

·Have you finished your homework yet?

你做完作业了吗?

·I haven't finished it yet. I'll do it after dinner.
我还没有完成。我晚饭后再做。
