"But as David Reiss, my guest on this week’s episode of The Business of Tech, told me that moving to the cloud isn’t necessarily the panacea if you are looking to lower the ongoing costs of running your IT systems."
"Cloud “bill shock” is an increasing reality, not just in New Zealand but globally."
“Most organisations we talk to now are in the cloud,” Reiss said, “but they are suffering some of those problems due to the fact that they kind of evolved into it rather than necessarily having it being initially a strategic objective.”

With Big Tech hyperscalers investing billions in local data centres and the Government taking a cloud-first stand, the migration of our data and applications to cloud platforms is in full swing.
But as David Reiss, my guest on this week’s episode of The Business of Tech, told me that moving to the cloud isn’t necessarily the panacea if you are looking to lower the ongoing costs of running your IT systems.
The co-CEO of 30-year-old tech services firm, Equinox IT, says costs can escalate quickly in the cloud without the controls and culture in place.
“Most organisations we talk to now are in the cloud,” Reiss said, “but they are suffering some of those problems due to the fact that they kind of evolved into it rather than necessarily having it being initially a strategic objective.”
Cloud “bill shock” is an increasing reality, not just in New Zealand but globally.
“There has definitely been a lot of higher [spending] than was expected. Some of the cloud pricing models appear very opaque, they appear very confusing, and it can be very difficult to figure out what is costing you money in the cloud environment if it’s not set up well to begin with,” Reiss said.
So what's the answer? a cultural change in our organisations where IT departmjents and business teams get on the same page about what they need to do in the cloud - and plan accordingly.

00:03 Speaker 1 Welcome back to the Business ofTech powered by two DegreesBusiness. I'm your host Peter Griffin, coming to you this week fromAuckland's innovation hub, The Grid.Today we're examining a pressingissue that resonates with techleaders across New Zealand andbeyond. Cloud bill shock. That's themoment when an organizationmigrates its applications and data tothe cloud, only to discover that theongoing costs are much higher thanexpected, prompting budgetheadaches, tough conversations, andin some cases, real financial pain. Weknow that tech companies like a WUSand Microsoft are investing billions ofdollars in New Zealand buildinghyperscale data centers. They'retouting big productivity gains for ourbusinesses and governmentdepartments moving theirapplications and data to the cloud. There are genuine performanceimprovements and cost savings to behad in doing so, but you also need toknow what you're doing because thecloud can blow up in your face. Take, for example, a recent case inWellington were a user racked up aneyewatering sixteen thousand dollarsbill after experimenting with aGoogle AI tool. The bill was refundedafter it garnered some mediacoverage. Globally, there are storiesof organizations, sometimes evenlarge multinationals, suddenly facingmonthly invoices running to tens ofmillions of dollars. Its cloud usagescales faster than anyoneanticipated. When the Silicon ValleyNews website the information wasleaked some AWS documents intwenty nineteen, they showed thatApple and other companies had seenbig spikes in their cloud cost theprevious year. That was put downtwo so called egress fees, the costsassociated with moving data out ofthe AWS cloud or to a newgeographical location. It's freetypically to put data in these clouds,it's expensive to get them out. Nowthose charges are legitimate. It costsmoney in network bandwidth to shiftlarge amounts of data. This is thenature of demand based pricingwhich underpins public cloudplatforms. Again, it pays to knowexactly what you are doing to avoidbill shock. So joining me this week isDavid Reese, co CEO of equinox It, astalwart of New Zealand's techservices sector who's worked withscores of Q organizations to helpavoid or fix precisely this kind ofscenario. David brings a wealth ofexperience and not only cloudtechnology, but also in helpingbusinesses develop the rightcapabilities, visibility and teamcollaboration. They need to ensurethat cloud investments deliver truevalue instead of nasty surprises. Sothis conversation is essentiallistening for anyone read with cloudbudgets. We're planning a migrationin the coming year. Here's theinterview with Equinox. It's DavidReese. David, welcome to thebusiness of tech. How are you doingon a rainy day in Auckland.
03:22 Speaker 2 Yeah, good, thank you Dry,thankfully.
03:23 Speaker 3 Take us through the history ofEquinox.
03:26 Speaker 1 I t it's been around for a long time, astore really of the IT scene techiclarlyin Auckland and Wellington. You'vegot government clients, You've got areasonable presence in Wellington. But take us through the origin storyof Equinox.
03:39 Speaker 4 Yeah, Equinox has been around forthirty years, proudly in New Zealandonly operated and we've literally gotsome of the same clients that we didthirty years ago. And as you say, government agency, so started inWellington and then decided todiversify into Auckland. So I joinedthe company about eight and a halfyears ago now where we're lookingto change a little bit about how we'reapproaching the Auckland marketbecause as an organization, a teamat that point of six or seven people,we needed to have something thatwe're going to be famous for. So wesaid, well, look, we've been thelongest in a fact that stage onlydevots partner for Microsoft in NewZealand. Let's double down on thatwith the cloud skills we've got andactually create ourselves a positionwhich is very much about drivinggenuine business change throughthe use of cloud and DevOpstechnologies. And so that's whatwe've been doing in Auckland, andwe've been making that conversationyou know, increasingly more relevantto our Wellington clients as well.
