The wintertime in Sanya is sunny and comfortable, with the average daily temperature being around 20 degrees Celsius. In spite of the cold winter in other places around China, here you can still wear your sandals and T-shirts, roaming the seaside under the enjoyable sunshine.
When you visit Sanya, one thing can never be missed except tax-free-shopping and wonderful seafood, which is sailing at clear blue sea. Many people don't know how to charter a boat in Sanya.
Chris, founder of SAIL GLOBAL and expierienced sailor, shares his tips that you need to know before charter in Sanya.
1. In China only charter with skipper

Usually, experienced sailors tend to charter a boat without skipper. However, in
China this is not allowed as per local regulations, so you need to have a local Chinese skipper on board. But, if you have sailing experience，SAIL GLOBAL can arrange that you sail the boat by yourself. A local skipper knows about the environment, the good places to go, which is not only safer for the passenger but also provides free tour guidance.

2. Motor yacht vs Sailing yacht
A motor yacht only relies on their engine to push, the bigger, the more horsepower, the faster the speed. However, fuel consumption is much higher so that it is more expensive then sailing. The disadvantage of a motorboat is also the limitation of its travel distance. It need to be controlled not to run out of fuel in the sea if goes too far.
A sailing yacht (sailboat), can be divided by their length into mainstream types of less than 40 feet and bigger superyachts 40-70 feet or even bigger. The operating cost is relatively low and the speed is also slower then as motorboat, but the sailing distance in the sea is less limited and more flexible, and more interactive with the natural environment. If the wind speed is strong, the sailing is full of excitement.
3. Term of chartering
The minimum chartering time in Sanya usually is 3 hours, but you can also choose 6-hour or 9-hour (a full day) package depending on your tour plan. The time is counted from the departure to the docking back at the marina.
According to local marine regulations，staying overnight on board is not permitted when the boat is offshore. The most common agenda of boats for leisure in Snaya is 9:00-18:00. Boats on the sea should back to the port by 18:00-18:30. Except important events like large-scale regatta, only after the application to local marine administration approved, can a boat sail exceeding the time limit.
Another reason why stay overnight on boat in China is not practicable is that often the galley (kitchen) is not equipped for cooking on boat. As well the cabins often dont have bedlinen, sheets and pillows. In addition, there is no staff to provide service at night. Therefore, enjoying the night at hotel and local bars is also a great choice.
4. Types of boat
Excellent sailing capability with spacious and comfortable salon space. The overall layout of the deck is ergonomic, and the good sports performance is suitable for the tourists who pursue the exciting sailing experience. The yacht is limited to eight passengers (incl. skipper).

5. Routes of sailing
Classical route (for a 3-hour and 6-hour package)
Hongzhou Yacht Marina-Phoenix Island- Daqingzhou Island- Serenity Marina - Sanya Cape-Hongzhou Yacht Marina.
From Sanya Hongzhou Yacht Marina, boat sails out of the harbor and you can see fishing boats working at sea along the way. Standing on the most southern tip of Hainan Island, the statue of Luhuitou, a symbol of love, can be seen from the sea. Further on, you will come to Phoenix Island, also known as “Oriental Dubai”, where modern buildings have become the landmark of Sanya.
Next stop, Daqingzhou is surrounded by reefs. You can discover the unique landscape of the peninsula which is a mix of mountain and island, and enjoy the charming scenery of Sanya Bay. The captain would be kind enough to drop anchor in Lover's Bay. And passengers could have fun in the sea. The captain will set sail again and return to the marina when it’s about the time.
Routes for a 9-hour package
Route1：Sanya Bay-Yalong Bay
Route2：Hongzhou Yacht Marina（or Serenity Marina）-（East Island）- West Island
Route3：Hongzhou Yacht Marina（or Serenity Marina）- Nanshan Temple
A whole day is enough to sail from Sanya Bay to Yalong Bay which is famous for the unique white beach stretching more than 8 kilometers. Splendid coral reefs and high visibility of water make Yalong Bay a perfect destination to dive.
If passenger thinks Yalong Bay is a little far from downtown area, there are also another two optional routes. The West Island is an ideal place to go for people who love water activities as the there is the biggest water amusement park in Sanya. The other route is going to Nanshan Temple where a 108 meters high Buddha statue stands by the sea. It can be a meaningful Buddhism culture exploring tour.

6. Water activities
There are plenty of water sport activities possible. Snorkeling gear and fishing tools and baits are given away with boat booking, which is often equipped with gears such as SUP and floating mat. And passengers can experience taking the helm in open areas. Extra paid activities include diving, motorboat, banana boat, flying fish boat, paragliding and the network popular sport sky flying. Food can be brought on board, and complimentary fruit platters and drinks will be provided on boat.
