Today on CNBC’s The China Connection, Automobility Founder and CEO Bill Russo discussed Tesla’s evolving position in China—and why the company can no longer be viewed simply as a high-growth electric vehicle story.
China remains Tesla’s most important manufacturing base, producing approximately 52% of its global vehicle volume. But it is also now Tesla’s toughest competitive market. Tesla’s China sales are down roughly 9% this year, even as stronger European demand has helped stabilize its global performance.

Tesla is no longer competing with companies that are merely catching up. It is competing with the world’s most advanced automotive innovation ecosystem.
Chinese companies such as XPeng, Xiaomi and Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance are digital and software natives. They are redefining vehicle architecture, intelligent driving, user experience and the broader business model for physical AI.
The interview also addressed why BYD may not be the most relevant benchmark for Tesla. BYD’s core advantage is industrial scale and vertical integration. Tesla’s more direct competitors in the AI-defined vehicle era may be companies such as XPeng and Huawei-backed automakers that were built around software, electronics and intelligent systems.
Tesla still has considerable strengths, including manufacturing scale, brand recognition and a large installed vehicle base. But its next phase will depend on whether it can maintain leadership in software and AI while competing against Chinese companies that are innovating faster and scaling globally.
