China Solar Lobby Says Slower Growth Marks Sustainable Shift
China's solar lobby said the sector is on a more sustainable track after solar installations fell 66% in the first half of 2026.
The China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) declined to update its 2026 installation forecast at its annual conference in Ningbo on Thursday, breaking from its usual practice. The association previously forecast 180 gigawatts to 240 gigawatts of new solar additions this year, far below last year's record 315 gigawatts.
The slowdown came after China introduced new rules requiring wind and solar projects to sell electricity at market-based prices instead of fixed government tariffs. China added 72 gigawatts of solar capacity in the first six months of 2026, down from 212 gigawatts a year earlier.
"Installations so far this year are a return to rationalization and normalization after last year's rush," Wang Bohua, former secretary-general of the CPIA, said in a keynote speech at the conference.
Despite the near-term slowdown, China's renewable energy ambitions remain unchanged. The country on Thursday released its renewable energy plan for the 15th Five-Year Plan period, targeting a 53% increase in renewable energy consumption over the next five years and aiming to make intermittent wind and solar power more reliable sources of electricity.
