China's CATL Backs Hydropower Project With SDIC Power

China's largest battery maker, CATL, will invest in a hydropower project in Sichuan province through a joint venture with state-owned power producer SDIC Power.

中国最大的电池制造商宁德时代将通过与国有电力生产商国投电力的合资企业,投资四川省的一个水电项目。

The companies will form Yalong River Yagen Hydropower Development to build a hydropower station on the Yalong River in Yajiang county, Ganzi prefecture, according to an SDIC Power filing on July 21. The project, located downstream of an existing station, carries a planned investment of 33.39 billion yuan ($4.66 billion), with CATL taking a 10% stake in the venture.

根据国投电力7月21日的公告,两家公司将组建雅砻江牙根水电开发有限公司,在四川省甘孜州雅江县的雅砻江上建设一座水电站。该项目位于现有水电站下游,计划投资333.9亿元,宁德时代持有合资企业10%的股份。

Construction is expected to last about 101 months. The first generating unit is due to start operating in 2035, with full commissioning expected a year later. Once completed, the plant will provide electricity equivalent to replacing 2.664 GW of coal- and gas-fired power generation capacity, according to SDIC Power.

工程总工期预计为101个月。首台机组将于2035年开始运行,预计一年后全部建成投产。国投电力表示,一旦建成,该发电站可替代2.664吉瓦燃煤、燃气机组容量。

The project is expected to save about 2.535 million tonnes of standard coal and 2.086 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year on a thermal-equivalent basis, while reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by around 4.51 million tonnes.

该项目预计每年可节省标准煤约253.5万吨、天然气约20.86亿立方米,减少二氧化碳排放约451万吨。

The investment reflects growing efforts by battery manufacturers to secure renewable electricity as they seek to cut emissions across their supply chains. For CATL, the project could help ensure access to green power while supporting its broader decarbonisation goals.
