A Chinese operator is set to launch a liner-style container service connecting Ningbo-Zhoushan with Felixstowe, the UK’s largest container port, with onward sailings to Rotterdam, Hamburg and Gdansk.
The route will use Russia’s Northern Sea Route but bypass Russian ports entirely.
The inaugural sailing, scheduled for 20 September, is already fully booked. The Arctic leg from Ningbo to Felixstowe is expected to take just 18 days — less than half the transit time of a traditional route via the Suez Canal.
For now, the service will operate seasonally. The development of high ice-class containerships could eventually extend the sailing window into the winter and spring months.
The Arctic is becoming an increasingly important part of the global shipping conversation. If seasonal services prove commercially viable, the Northern Sea Route could open up new options for Asia–Europe supply chains.
