I am Feng Shuo, a post-2000 clerk at the Middle East Office under the Overseas Engineering Division of MCC22. If the Overseas Engineering Division is a sharp assault unit charging forward, our Middle East Office is a firm nail anchored on the shores of the Red Sea. Today, instead of preaching empty theories, I want to share candidly how we work and live in this outpost thousands of miles away from our motherland.

Nestled in the core transportation zone of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, adjacent to the Red Sea, the Middle East Office of the Overseas Engineering Division serves as the company’s frontier foothold for deep cultivation of the Middle East market. Far from the stereotypical impression of desolate and monotonous overseas stations, though small, this site boasts complete functional zones, forming a shared base for all office staff. The office area is neatly divided into three sections: reception and negotiation zone, daily workstations and independent meeting rooms. The reception area is stocked with bilingual corporate brochures and project performance manuals. Workstations are piled with engineering drawings, FIDIC contract templates, Middle East industry standards and translation documents - our daily battlefield for tender preparation, document control and technical coordination. The independent meeting room is equipped with large-screen projectors, hosting all project progress meetings, online cross-regional conferences and foreign-related professional training sessions. Complete living facilities lie at the rear of the station, including a kitchen, reading lounge and fitness corner, easing our homesickness far away from home. Our business covers multiple cities across Saudi Arabia, spanning sectors such as steel structure construction and factory plant development. Within this compact office lie all core functions: business liaison, document translation, contract risk control and project follow-up.

For me, living and working abroad have long intertwined as one. Daily fundamental work includes bilingual document translation and email correspondence. I sort out emails delayed by time zone differences, convert English bidding documents and client correspondence into Chinese, and simultaneously translate domestic technical plans and quotation materials into local commonly used languages. Every professional engineering term is double-checked to avoid performance risks stemming from translation errors. Translating, formatting and proofreading a full tender document of hundreds of pages often takes an entire day. During tender submission deadlines, the office lights stay on late into the night.

I frequently liaise with local clients on-site and provide on-site interpretation. I accompany client visits, site surveys and business negotiations throughout the process. Strict adherence to Arab business etiquette is required, balancing local cultural customs with corporate demands to build a bridge for efficient communication between Chinese and foreign parties. Here, I am far more than a mere data relay - I act as a comprehensive data hub. I organize and archive full sets of engineering files, assist with qualification submission for various projects, build standardized digital ledgers for client information, and coordinate with functional departments back home to submit and file materials. Holding multiple roles simultaneously is demanding, yet day-in and day-out practice has drastically boosted my capabilities in foreign language communication, overseas market development and comprehensive administrative management.

聚是一团火，散是满天星

Our office team only has six employees. On foreign soil, we are not merely colleagues, but comrades who stand together through thick and thin.

I still recall a tender deadline crunch when the whole team entered a wartime state. Some handled translation, some reviewed quotations, others liaised with clients. We divided tasks and collaborated closely, cheering each other on deep into the night, resolutely tackling one tough challenge after another. This tacit teamwork instantly bridged communication barriers caused by language and cultural gaps. In daily life, we comfort one another. During spare time, we take turns cooking; a plate of spicy sour shredded potatoes or a bowl of steaming homemade noodles is enough to ease homesickness thousands of miles away. On traditional festivals including the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Spring Festival, we organize various staff events, celebrating synchronously with colleagues and families back home across the ocean.

Beyond business and daily life, ideological development remains a priority. The station regularly hosts Party building study sessions, overseas youth safety training and on-the-job experience exchange forums. Standing by the Red Sea, we collectively learn about the mission and responsibility of overseas builders, and exchange practical experience in market development and cross-border safety management. These efforts not only consolidate our ideological foundation, but also fill this compact office with positive, uplifting energy.

初心如磐：黄沙见证成长

Saudi Arabia sees scorching heat all year round. On windy days, yellow sand billows with hot gusts at noon; yet at dusk, the Red Sea sunset bathes the entire sea in golden glow without reserve.

After a full day’s work, we sometimes stand by the Red Sea, gazing out at the winding coastline. At that moment, homesickness surges over us - we miss familiar faces of relatives back home, and confront the unique loneliness of expatriate life: the frustration of cross-cultural communication, exhaustion from long-term high-pressure work, and deep regret for being unable to stay beside our families. These are the raw, harsh realities of overseas postings.

Yet exhaustion is always soothed by the fruits of our labor.

When carefully translated tender documents are successfully submitted, when rigorously reviewed contracts are finally signed, when projects we track evolve step by step from blueprints into tangible reality, an indescribable sense of pride wells up within us. This pride as young overseas staff outweighs all loneliness.

I understand that stationed abroad, we must continuously enrich ourselves to hold our ground and explore new markets. Our team keeps delving into engineering policies and market regulations of all Middle Eastern countries. On this foreign land brimming with opportunities and challenges, I refuse to be a mere spectator. Instead, I aim to be a down-to-earth cultivator, penning outstanding stories for young overseas employees like us with sweat and wisdom.
