The craft beer-community space-nice hang bar Junto in Jing’an is turning one years young, and they’re throwing down in a major way to celebrate. On Friday and Saturday, expect games, prizes, pass-the-parcel-style chances to win fancy bottles of beer, face painting, balloon animals, piñatas stuffed with brewery merch, magic, clownery, “impossible amounts of birthday cake”, and a bouncy castle, which is only for those 18 and up. Shanghainese  dancehall/reggae MC/DJ Jado has a party at C's on Friday called Dubwise: Shanghai Town, with special guest WUKONGOO. Expect many forms of Jamaican sounds, from reggae and ska to jungle and dancehall. Jado is the real deal – this should be a good night in the quintessential  Shanghai dive bar.

Promoter Knot is at C-Park club Illum with some new underground trance and club sounds. This Saturday is the fifth season of Knot’s 15 Minutes of Lies and Truth series, and they’re inviting Mongolian-born, Australia-based trance artist CLAIR (白欣) to perform her hybrid live set. Vol. 29 of the Yuyintang Channel series continues to spotlight emerging (or unsung) bands over at their Basement space - and tonight's got an eclectic spread for shoegaze and dream pop lovers including the most  spectacular The Curly - a year after their debut LP made a huge splash across China. Hailing from Qunazhou, they’re as good as they come - assured, woozy, with a starry-eyed romanticism that isn’t afraid to bear  its soul. Read on

The emo resurgence is in full swing in 2026 - as a new generation of kids disillusioned by the world around them found solace in screaming their guts out to anyone who would listen. But far from the pop-punk highs of ’My Chemical Romance’ or even the whimsy of ‘American Football’-the emo of today’s youth touches on the more visceral and noisier corners of the genre. So much so that emo has become more of a catch-all for this wave of young ravenous rockers (and their open-hearted fans) than a cue to their music sensibilities. Read on

On the docket, you’ve got freshly minted Shanghai-based technical death metal band Hounds of Tindalos, who draw inspiration from Cthulhu mythology; metalcore outfit Chaos Mind; crossover thrashers Kill All Posers (aka K.A.P); and the always chugging heavy metal renegades Litium, looking to keep your eardrums ringing. Changsha’s Berlin Psych Nurses, whose post-punk-inflicted brand of indie rock has set the music scene ablaze, hit up Singer Space tonight. Taking cues from Interpol, Joy Division, Elefant, and Nick Cave - there’s a theatrical finesse in its lyricism and instrumental heft, allowing its dark melodic edges to strike with precision and its manic carnal energy to wrap you up. They join forces with Beijing art punks Wasted Laika, known for their evocative, charismatic, and poetic rock and roll - cut with a bittersweet romanticism that seems ageless and a chamber pop twang (with a touch of surf rock by way of the Eastern Bloc) that grounds their sound.

Changsha-based singer-songwriter, known for her dizzying blend of neo-folk, trip-hop and synth-pop, toils with the ‘hate’ that engulfed her over the past two years on her new EP Three Seeds - coming out the other end anew. With ethereal certitude, the chameleon artist weaves tones, styles, and ideas  - all with harmonious dexterity and vibrant pungency. You’ve got Shanghai’s premier surf rock aficionados The Psyders with fellow Shanghai swing rockers Flying Carpet, and budding Jiaxing hard blues rockers Tabris - evoking the best of the 60s and 70s. Highlighting the transporting, mystifying, and beguiling world of experimental, instrumental, and improvisational rock music, the Crescendo Music Festival - in its fourth year - has both expanded its reach and sound palette for its latest audial feast - a diverse lineup features a wide array of characters and bands from around the globe this year, taking over both Yuyintown Basement and Cube in C-Park. Highlights include London’s Five the Hierophant - where psychedelic free jazz meets doom  metal - as well as Indonesian ‘primal-core’ duo KUNTARI - a wild, dark,  intense mix of primitive voices, animal mating, Indonesian tribal  rhythms, and dark ambience. The legendary khoomei renegade, Sainkho Namtchylak, a female singer whose voice spans seven octaves and who has used her gift to take the traditional music of Tuva and bring it into a new era, will also be on hand. Read on

Philadelphia shoegaze band Nothing returns to China with material from their new album A Short History of Decay. Known for combining towering walls of noise with melody, atmosphere, and emotional intensity, the band brings their latest chapter to Shanghai as part of a three-city China tour.

A high-definition screening of the Russian musical Anna Karenina, presented by the Moscow Operetta Theatre. This filmed production brings Tolstoy’s classic love story to the screen with large-scale staging, music, and theatrical visuals.

Stars of New York Ballet Gala brings principal dancers, soloists, and dancers from New York City Ballet to Shanghai for two evenings of classical and contemporary ballet. Led by Chun Wai Chan, the company’s first Chinese principal dancer, the program features works by George Balanchine alongside contemporary choreography and iconic pas de deux.

New York indie-pop duo Daisy the Great brings their distinctive blend of folk-inspired melodies, theatrical storytelling, and intricate vocal harmonies to Shanghai. Best known for their viral hit "The Record Player Song," the band has evolved into one of the most compelling voices in contemporary indie pop.

This organ recital by Olivier Latry, titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris, brings a wide-ranging program from Baroque to contemporary works. The concert also features improvisation, highlighting one of his defining strengths. It takes place on one of China’s largest pipe organs at Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

On the final day of the Vivian Maier exhibition, Fotografiska Shanghai hosts an evening of live classical music from the Shanghai Nova Sinfonietta String Trio, conducted by Italian maestro Roberto Fiore. The program moves from Vienna to Buenos Aires, with works by Mozart, Beethoven, Handel-Halvorsen, Bizet, Schubert, Mascagni, Tchaikovsky, Gardel, Piazzolla, and Kreisler, finishing with an encore of Karl Jenkins' *Palladio*. The Cloud Soccer Festival brings the FIFA 2026 World Cup to the skies of Shanghai. Visitors can get close to the official World Cup trophy, explore football memorabilia, enjoy interactive games, and take in  panoramic city views.

Crystal Bridge is hosting a four-day summer beer festival from July 16–19, bringing together craft breweries, food vendors and a packed lineup of live entertainment. LU1885 Cocktail Festival returns for its second edition from July 17–19, bringing together 15+ bars and cocktail brands at LU1885 in Lujiazui. Colombian Independence Day lands on the HIGHLINE rooftop this Saturday with a full evening of Latin music, dancing, and plenty of yellow, blue, and red. Expect Colombian hits alongside reggaeton, salsa, merengue, and other Latin classics, courtesy of DJs Naz, Blez, and FWhite. “Baby, Listen to Me Sing: Magic Jazz Night” brings jazz music to young audiences and families, featuring Bibidi Magic Jazz Band with singer Yuxinyi (Fengli) and musicians Wu Xi, Bao Yichuan, Wang Pinhuan, and Li Yaoyu. The concert introduces children to jazz through familiar melodies, improvisation, and interactive moments. The performance is part of the 2026 Big Whale Summer Music Island program and will take place on July 18 and 19 at Roewe Shanghai Children's Art Theatre. Read on
