On July 10, 2026, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) held its Global Awards ceremony in Geneva. Among the 1,300 applicants from 126 countries, 11 companies won, and three were from China - making China the country with the most winners for the fifth consecutive year since the award was established in 2022.
For foreign investors already in China or considering entry, this is not just a headline. It is a signal about how intellectual property is being used here - and what it means for your business.
What Is the WIPO Global Award?
The WIPO Global Award is not a technology competition or a design prize. It is an assessment of how well a company uses intellectual property to drive business growth. It is open only to small and medium-sized enterprises and startups - large corporations are not eligible. To qualify, a company must have at least one registered IP right and be operating in domestic or international markets.
How Winners Are Selected
The judging criteria are instructive for any business thinking about IP strategy:
IP Portfolio Fit: Does the company's core product or service have corresponding patents, trademarks, or copyrights? Has it secured international IP protection in its main overseas markets? Can its core patents prevent competitors from copying, and has it successfully defended them?
IP Commercialisation Results: How much of the company's revenue growth comes from proprietary technology or brand premium? Does it generate licensing income? Has it used IP for pledge financing or as equity contributions? Does its overseas revenue match its international IP layout strategy?
Internal IP Management System: Does the company have dedicated IP staff? Has it built a full-process management system covering R&D, patent mining, trademark protection, and risk control? Are employees trained regularly? Are export products checked for freedom-to-operate?
Social Value and Sustainability: How does the business contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals - reducing carbon emissions, improving healthcare access, creating jobs, or supporting other businesses?
Who Won - And What They Tell Us
This year's Chinese winners all focus on environmental technology and life sciences:
- Botree Recycling (Suzhou): Battery recycling and critical material regeneration. The company has filed 129 patents in China, including 103 invention patents, and operates across Asia, Europe, and North America.
- ArteryFlow (Hangzhou): AI-powered cardiovascular disease diagnosis. Its non-invasive technology replaces invasive procedures with rapid hemodynamic calculations.
- Regend Therapeutics (Suzhou): Lung regenerative medicine. Its world-first lung repair therapy is in Phase 3 clinical trials and has already helped hundreds of patients.
Globally, winners span agritech, biopharma, clean energy, advanced materials, AI, and digital health - areas where China is also building strong IP portfolios.
Why This Matters for Foreign Investors
1. Chinese SMEs Are Taking IP Seriously
The fact that Chinese companies have won every year since 2022 and topped the list in 2026 shows that intellectual property is no longer just for large multinationals. Smaller Chinese firms are building strategic IP portfolios and using them to compete globally.
2. IP Is a Core Business Asset, Not Just Legal Protection
The WIPO criteria emphasise commercialisation, management systems, and social impact. This mirrors a broader trend: in China, IP is increasingly viewed as a business growth driver. Companies use patents for financing, licensing, and market expansion.
3. International IP Protection Is a Prerequisite for Global Business
All winners had international IP strategies. For foreign investors, this reinforces a key point: if you want to protect your technology in China, you need to register patents and trademarks here. And if Chinese companies are protecting their IP abroad, they will expect the same from their partners.
4. Government Support Follows IP Strength
Multiple Chinese regions offer policy support, subsidies, and fast-track approvals for companies with strong IP. This is not just about awards - it affects everything from talent recruitment to project approvals.
What the Award Framework Teaches You
The WIPO Global Award judging criteria provide a useful checklist for your own IP strategy:
- Is your IP portfolio complete and aligned with your products and markets?
- Can you show the financial value your IP generates?
- Do you have a systematic internal IP management process?
- Are you using IP to contribute to broader social goals?
Getting Started with IP in China
For foreign investors, the lesson is clear. Intellectual property is not a secondary concern. It is central to business success in China and globally. If you are setting up a company, you need to register your core trademarks and patents early. If you are already operating, you should review whether your IP strategy matches your commercial ambitions.
