Some Chinese Refiners to Receive No Saudi Term Crude Next Month
Some Chinese oil refiners are due to receive no term crude shipments from Saudi Arabia next month, as weaker domestic demand coincides with tighter Saudi export availability.
At least two refiners requested no cargoes, while others asked for a delivery but have so far received no provisional allocation, Bloomberg reported, citing traders with direct knowledge of the matter.
Global oil markets have been thrown into renewed uncertainty this month as tensions between the United States and Iran escalated, raising concerns over the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, Chinese demand for imported crude has weakened significantly since the conflict escalated, easing pressure on regional suppliers such as Saudi Arabia and helping to limit gains in oil prices.
China imported 29.3 million tons of crude in June, down 41% from a year earlier and marking the country's lowest monthly import volume in nearly ten years, according to customs data released on Tuesday.
Over the past three months, Saudi Aramco's monthly crude allocations to China have ranged between 10 million and 20 million barrels. The volumes are significantly lower than a year earlier, reflecting disruptions to cargoes loaded from Ras Tanura following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as weaker Chinese demand.
