China Auto Sales Slide Again as Exports Cushion Domestic Slump
China's passenger-car market faced continued contraction in June, with newly released data highlighting a deepening divide between sluggish domestic demand and booming overseas sales.

Retail sales of passenger vehicles dropped 23.2% year-on-year to 1.6 million units, according to data released Wednesday by China's Passenger Car Association. New-energy vehicle (NEV) sales, including plug-in hybrids and pure-electric vehicles, also declined 9% year-on-year.

To offset the domestic slowdown, automakers turned increasingly to overseas markets. NEV exports surged more than 150% to 499,000 units. BYD saw total shipments rise 5.5% despite a 20% decline in domestic sales, as overseas deliveries nearly doubled from a year earlier.

Amid the broader slowdown in Chin's auto market, Tesla delivered one of the month's strongest performances. The U.S. automaker delivered 89,091 vehicles from its Shanghai plant in June, including 52,920 units sold in China. The result marked Tesla's best monthly total of the year and extended its year-on-year growth streak in the Chinese market to eight months.

Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the association, warned that costs and profit margins remain under severe pressure, squeezed by soaring automotive-grade chip prices and speculative bidding for lithium carbonate.
