Trade and Investment Agreements (Consultation) Bill 2026
The Australian Government has introduced the Trade and Investment Agreements (Consultation) Bill 2026, establishing a framework for the negotiation, consultation, and review of Australia's free trade agreements (FTAs), with certain requirements extending to bilateral investment treaties (BITs).
Enhancing Transparency and Community Input
The Bill improves transparency by mandating the release of information on new covered FTAs and major amendments (e.g., upgrades) to the Australian public throughout the negotiation process.
Establishment of Trade Advisory Group
A Trade Advisory Group comprising experts from key economic and community sectors will be established. The Government is required to consult this group at critical negotiation stages to incorporate diverse perspectives into decision-making.
Strategic Implementation
