Shanghai Just Issued Its First Heat Alert of the Year; Super Typhoon Bavi May Affect the City Later This Week

Shanghai is heading into a rough weather week — sweltering heat first, with possible typhoon-related changes later in the week.

Heat Alert: Shanghai’s First of the Year

At 12:20 pm on July 6, the Shanghai Meteorological Observatory issued the city’s first high-temperature yellow warning of 2026, with temperatures in central districts expected to exceed 35°C.

The city heated up quickly this morning. Before 10 am, temperatures had already climbed above 32°C, while relative humidity remained high at around 90% to 65%, making the weather feel especially muggy.

According to local forecasts, Shanghai will remain mostly cloudy over the next few days, with longer periods of sunshine on Tuesday and Wednesday. Short showers may still appear in some areas in the afternoon.

Rain is expected to briefly ease on Thursday. From Friday, showers are expected to become more frequent again, along with stronger southeasterly winds, and temperatures may fall slightly.

Typhoon Watch: Bavi May Affect Eastern China This Week

Meanwhile, weather authorities are also monitoring Typhoon Bavi, the ninth typhoon of the year.

Bavi is currently maintaining super typhoon status and is showing a well-defined eye with a large, symmetrical cloud structure.

Although Bavi is still far from China, forecasters say it may begin to affect China’s eastern sea areas and many eastern regions later this week, bringing the risk of strong winds and heavy rain.

After July 8, Bavi is expected to move toward waters east of Taiwan. From there, it could approach China’s southeastern coast or track northward offshore.

The key variable is the position of the subtropical high-pressure system. Two main scenarios are currently being discussed: the typhoon could bypass Taiwan and head more directly toward Zhejiang, or it could make landfall in Taiwan first before moving on to Fujian.

Because Bavi’s path is still changing, residents in Shanghai and other parts of eastern China should follow official forecasts and prepare for possible typhoon-related wind and rain, especially before outdoor plans, travel, ferry trips, or coastal activities later this week.
