Khyber Tobacco inks MoU with Korea's KT&G

巴基斯坦开伯尔烟草有限公司周一宣布,已与韩国领先的烟草及消费品企业 KT&G 公司初步签署了一份谅解备忘录,以获得 KT&G 旗下香烟品牌"Pine Passion Sky"的 royalty 许可授权。

该公司在向巴基斯坦证券交易所提交的通知中披露了这一进展。

通知称,该谅解备忘录之后将就拟议的许可安排签订正式协议。根据该协议,开伯尔烟草计划在巴基斯坦以及"双方可能共同商定的其他地区"生产和/或销售该品牌,"但须签署最终协议、获得所有适用的监管批准并满足常规商业条件"。

Khyber Tobacco Company Limited (KHTC) announced on Monday that it had initially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KT&G Corporation, a South Korean leading tobacco and consumer goods company, for the grant of a royalty license in respect of KT&G's cigarette brand Pine Passion Sky.

KHTC disclosed the development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange today.

It said that the MoU will be followed by a formal agreement about the proposed licensing arrangement, under which KHTC intends to manufacture and/or market the brand in Pakistan and"such other territories as may be mutually agreed, subject to the execution of definitive agreements, obtaining all applicable regulatory approvals, and satisfaction of customary commercial conditions".

"The company is optimistic that this strategic collaboration will have the potential to strengthen our product portfolio, enhance our competitive position, and support future business growth,"the notice added.

KHTC was incorporated in Pakistan as a public limited company in 1954. The company manufactures and sells cigarettes, besides the re-drying of tobacco.

The company also has filter rods and other non-tobacco materials in its portfolio.

KHTC has a strong market presence in Pakistan, and it has also expanded its distribution network in Eastern Europe, South & West Africa, Central & South Asia and the Middle East.

Pakistan's Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi visited the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) logistics centre in Kashgar, where he reviewed its expanding cross-border logistics operations and highlighted China's role in strengthening regional trade, connectivity and economic integration through closer Pakistan-China cooperation.

During the visit, Hashmi received a briefing on NLC's logistics infrastructure, transport network and operational capabilities supporting the movement of goods between Pakistan, China and Central Asia. Officials said the corporation has expanded its logistics network to support rising bilateral trade and improve regional supply chain efficiency, according to an official statement issued on Sunday.

The briefing covered NLC's cargo handling, warehousing, customs facilitation, freight forwarding and multimodal transport services. The Kashgar logistics centre serves as a key gateway linking Pakistan with western China and Central Asia, enabling faster and more efficient cargo movement.

Hashmi praised NLC's contribution to Pakistan-China economic cooperation, describing the organisation as a key driver of bilateral trade and regional connectivity. He said its expanding logistics infrastructure supports the long-term economic partnership between Islamabad and Beijing.

Punjab has proposed policy measures to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, expand charging infrastructure and attract private investment, with officials saying Chinese technology could support the province's shift towards cleaner transport.

Officials said the Punjab Public Private Partnership Authority had submitted recommendations for developing an EV charging network and encouraging local and foreign investors to enter the sector.

The proposals come as Pakistan seeks to modernise transport, reduce dependence on imported fuels and promote low-emission mobility. China, a major global producer of electric vehicles and charging technologies, is seen by officials as a potential partner in Punjab's EV transition.

According to officials, the recommendations call for opening the EV charging sector to greater private participation through a clearer regulatory and financial framework for companies setting up charging stations across Punjab.

Special incentives have also been proposed for investors willing to build charging infrastructure in rural and underserved areas, where commercial returns may be lower but connectivity is needed to support wider EV adoption.

The proposals call for the use of public and private land to develop an integrated charging network across the province. Officials said they also include possible financial support for companies investing in charging stations to reduce early-stage risks.

The authority has proposed a dedicated financing mechanism for electric mobility projects, including green finance instruments and support from international financial institutions focused on climate resilience, clean energy and sustainable transport.

Officials said such financing could complement investment from Chinese companies with expertise in battery manufacturing, charging systems and electric mobility technologies.

Under the proposed framework, EV charging stations, battery-swapping facilities and related infrastructure could be developed through public-private partnership models combining government support with private-sector investment.

The policy also calls for a dedicated institutional mechanism to promote investment in Punjab's EV sector, improve coordination among government departments and speed up decisions on strategic EV projects.

Officials said the proposals would support Punjab's environmental goals by helping reduce transport-related emissions, improve urban air quality and promote cleaner mobility.
