Position: Primary School Teacher (MUSIC)
Primary Role/Function: Music Teacher will be responsible for teaching music education to students in
Grades 1 - 6 and assists the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of music instruction.
Helps students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of
planned music experiences which include singing, moving to music, playing of instruments and listening
and performs other duties directly related to this job description
Reports to: International School Principal
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in primary education or related field, Advanced degree preferred,
with valid teaching certification in Music. Minimum 2 years experience in an American or International
school, experience or familiarity with American curriculum and/or Music Standards, experience in teaching
second language learners preferred.
Other Skills: Deep understanding of the developmental needs of primary school children, excellent
knowledge and application of appropriate strategies and methods to support English language learners
Excellent knowledge of and experience in using a variety of assessments and differentiated instruction
Excellent knowledge of the content and pedagogy
Strong organizational and time management skills
Skillful in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with school leaders, colleagues,
scholars, and parents
Areas of Responsibility: In addition to the primary functions and skill-sets noted above, Music teacher
responsibilities include:
● Teaches general music to G1 – G6 grade including harmony, appreciation, theory, history, and ensemble.
● Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are
appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
● Provides opportunities for music ensembles including rock band, choir & musicals
● Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs (i.e. winter concert and talent shows) for school
and community.
● Differentiate music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.
● Develops and refines music curriculum based on Music / IPC standards of creating, performing, and
responding.
● Evaluates each student’s musical growth and contribution to the performance of the group that allows
everyone to contribute.
● Communicates clearly with parents and school faculty/staff on the progress of individual students; i.e.
through report cards and school newsletters.
Revised June 2022 ● Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent
loss or abuse.
● Cooperation with Head of School and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open
house, parent meetings and seasonal programs
Creates Unit Plans, as well as daily or weekly lesson plans, aligned with designated standards (IPC or
other standards), which drives instruction through formative assessment and differentiation
Uses the school’s record keeping system to track attendance, grades, etc.
Maintains a safe, organized classroom, which supports students’ independent and collaborative learning
Maintains the music room in a clean, attractive and functional manner.
Supervises children during breaks and ensures safe and orderly transitions (supervision duties assigned
by principal or designee)
Monitors and maintains a positive classroom environment that supports school-wide behavior
expectations where students are engaged, incorporates mutual respect, and provides cooperative learning
opportunities
Uses technology to enhance and enrich learning experiences
Manages student behavior in accordance with the school’s beliefs and values stated within the behavior
policy.
Participates in school community building, events and activities.
Participate in Professional Development and stays up to date with current teaching methods, practices
and any new knowledge in the field
Participates in school development committees as developed and/or approved by the principal
Performs other job-related duties as determined by JTIS the Principal
