Buying Juice in China? That Big “NFC” Label May Be Fooling You

Do you usually check the front label when buying juice, or do you read the ingredient list?

A recent juice-label controversy in Shanghai has reminded consumers to look more carefully at what is written on the bottle.

According to local media reports, several products from the brand Wei Chuan were previously questioned for highlighting “NFC” on the front of the package, while the smaller word meaning “contains” was printed in a much less noticeable way.

NFC means “not from concentrate”, which is commonly associated with juice that has not been concentrated and reconstituted with water.

However, some of the questioned products reportedly listed water and concentrated juice in the ingredient list, raising concerns that consumers could mistake them for pure NFC juice.

One product also drew attention because it was marketed with a peach-related name, but media reports said a 300ml bottle contained only 3 grams of peach pulp.

After the issue was reported, the company said it had started updating the packaging of some products. A recent follow-up visit by local media found that some products from the brand’s related series had already changed their packaging, and the previously questioned “contains NFC” marking had been removed.

Industry insiders said that some non-NFC juice products may use large “NFC” wording on the front packaging to make the product look closer to pure fresh juice, while placing key qualifiers in much smaller text.

The reason is simple: NFC juice is usually sold at a higher price than non-NFC juice.

Legal experts have also called for clearer industry standards to prevent misleading packaging and better protect consumers.

For shoppers, the reminder is simple: always check the ingredient list. If water or concentrated juice appears near the top, the product may not be the pure NFC juice you expected.
