Omega Mart

The Difference Between

Appreciation Across Generations

I am a Gen Z, and my mom is a Gen Y.

In short, we have very different views on the same item or activity.  A lot of times, she loves doing something, but I might just tolerate it.

Yesterday my family and I spent the whole morning participating in an immersive art experience, or to explain it—Omega Mart. Basically, Omega Mart, explained many by the founders, is a “interactive, mind-bending immersive art experience. Participants explore an extraordinary supermarket that bursts into surreal worlds and unexpected landscapes.”

Omega Mart revolves around a story line which the “players” try to complete their training at the company, Dramcorp. The twist is the company actually has many dark secrets and maybe even a murder is involved, we don’t know.

The first sight when I stepped into the super market was that is was just a normal Tuesday in a normal store.

However, when looking closer, I noticed how “weird and trippy everything was. There were several “glitches” in the supermarket, and the products on the shelves were complete wack.

Throughout the training that we were completing, it was clear that my mom wasn’t enjoying it at all. The “spill quiz”, watching “LED Talks” and booping your intern card wasn’t all great for her. She and my dad actually took a break and me and my brother finished the training course by ourselves.

After getting in the car, I asked my mom to rate the experience from 1-10. She responded with a 2. I had known that this was coming, but a 2 was even lower than I was expecting.

From these experiences you can tell that there's a big difference between from me and my mom's rank, and I think it’s because of the general “theme” of the generation.

For Millennials, I think that their generation was meant to be for “exploring”. For that I mean generation has seen the upbringing of the internet, in the invention of the iPhone, laptops, computers, and many other technologies that we take for granted today.

In my moms perspective, the weird core of Omega Mart doesn’t fit with her aesthetic views. She would think that it’s confusing and awkward. Instead, she likes to enjoy very “standard” activities— viewing natural landscapes, and participating in so-called normal events.

I think that Gen Z is about opening up to more things, and building on top of the foundation of the generations before us. Instead of seeing the invention of the internet, we use the internet as a base, and apps such as the Gram, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Tiktok are used to spread our morals and what we think of as “trendy”. I just loved the weird core themed Omega Mart more.

Even though both activities were memorable to me and my mom, it’s clear the difference between our preferences and the liking to each activity. I believe that this difference is actually great, since it shows that we, as the  new generation, have grown into a contrasting style which sets us apart from the past.
