随着2015年第一场SAT考试的结束,今年的第一个essay题目也随之揭晓(撒花)。看到这个题目(Can people have too much enthusiasm?),绝大多数考生都会心花怒放,心里不由唱起那句‘你是我的小啊小苹果,怎么爱你都不嫌多…’。
Enthusiasm, as oneof the most attractive qualities, is regarded as an inner force for people tocomplete work easier and make their lives shiner. As Douglas MacArthur said,“Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul”.Nevertheless, as absolute perfection can never be achieved, enthusiasm cannotalways be beneficial. When people show too much enthusiasm without carefulthinking, the consequences may be undesirable. Thus, people can have enthusiasmbut should be cautious about its extent.
With enthusiasm, people are likely to show perseverance, resilience and other positiveattitudes. When one is experiencing the pressure and frustration coming fromstereotypical rules, it is enthusiasm that motivates him to keep going, finallymaking his own voice heard. Aaron Brooks, one of the greatest small-sized pointguards, was an epitome of showing enthusiasm in American sports history. Bornin a normal black family, little Brooks had been pinned down as someone whoshall never excel in basketball playing because of his weakened and skinnybody. Due to his enthusiasm in basketball, he decided to persist in his dream.Instead of being swallowed the pain of discrimination, he strived by fillingeach single day of his childhood with strenuous training. Although he was oftenknocked down by those taller and stronger boys, when trying to better hisskills by playing with those veterans, he could eventually play better thanother seniors after practicing day by day. Within four years after he had beenrecruited, he rewrote the story of Chicago Bull with a legendary touch despitehis tiny build.
On the contrary, stubbornness caused by blind enthusiasm will result in terrible aftermath. Thetragedy of the fictional scientist in the Frankenstein, or the ModernPrometheus, vividly exemplifies the notion that, without enough considerationover possible consequences, the enthusiastic pursuit of a particular goal canhave devastating effects on one’s life. Born into a wealthy family, VictorFrankenstein is always enthusiastic to seek a great understanding of the worldwith scientific knowledge and he develops the idea of doing experiment bycreating living beings through human corpse. The death of his mother catalyzedthe reckless scientist’s dream of carrying out the experiment and he eventuallysucceeds in animating dead tissues, which leads to the creation of a monster. However, because of the difficulties in creating minute human parts, themonster was tall and hideous, with yellow eyes and skins barely covering themuscle tissue and blood vessels underneath. Besides, the monster murders fourof the scientist’s beloved ones, William, Justine, Clerval, and Elizabeth. At afit of rage, it urges Victor to create a female companion for him. Althoughreluctantly agreeing to do so, Victor decides to pursue the monster secretly inorder to seek revenge for his lost family. However, he does not kill his workand the fail vengeance cost his own life as the novel closes. If Victor hadforeseen the devastating results before the experiment, he would never put toomuch enthusiasm in doing so.
Working and livingenthusiastically can make people more satisfied with what they are doing, buttoo much enthusiasm may stop people thinking objectively. Keeping the degree ofone’s enthusiasm at an appropriate level is of crucial importance.
