Food & Drink

Shanghai loves (and we really do mean loves) hairy crab season. If you haven’t already indulged, now is the time to get crabby. Although the big fanfare around hairy crabs is usually at the beginning of October when they first come into season, male and female crabs are still readily available and still fresh - better yet, the crowds of crab-crazed diners have now thinned somewhat.

Here’s a list of three great places where you can still indulge in a crustacean or two (although a word of warning: if you’re having more than one crab, you should drink copious amounts of warming ginger tea to avoid a cold body from too much yin - brrrr).

Hakkasan

There’s something about getting down and dirty with a whole crab in glamorous surrounds that feels wonderfully decadent. Hakkasan is dishing up Yangcheng Lake crabs, traditionally steamed and served whole at 168RMB each until late November. If you’re not in the mood to get elbow deep in crab shell, Hakkasan is also serving crab meat sauteed with prawns and asparagus in a crab roe sauce (258RMB - all prices plus 10 percent service).

The Peninsula

Serving fresh Yangcheng Lake crabs across their three restaurants until December, you still have plenty of opportunity to sink your teeth into this local delicacy at The Peninsula. Gourmet crab menus are available in Sir Elly's (888RMB for five courses), Yi Long Court (crab dishes from 48RMB, or 368RMB whole crab with ginger tea) and The Lobby (588RMB for five courses). All prices are plus 15 percent service.

Chenglonghang Xiewangfu

With three branches across the city, Chenglonghang Xiewangfu is one of the best spots to satiate your appetite for authentic hairy crab from Yangcheng Lake. Dedicated to serving crab all year long - this eatery isn't called ‘The Kingdom for Crab’ for nothing - they offer male and female crabs of various weights to choose from (as well as some live kunqu - Chinese opera - performances because, well, why not?). And no worries if you can't shell your crab, the staff members will do this for you and lay it artfully on your plate. Prices start at 180RMB for a 4 liang (around 200 grams) male crab or a 3 liang (150 grams) female crab. Reservations are encouraged.
