The Great Gatsby

Northern Ballet: The Great Gatsby
Sat 30 - Sun 31, Shanghai Grand Theatre, 80-880RMB
The classic tale of hedonism, prohibition and infidelity is reincarnated in ballet form. While critics remain divided on the narrative elements (audiences, on the other hand, have embraced them), all agree that the total picture is mesmerising – particularly Jerome Kaplan’s stunning sets and David Nixon’s fluttery costumes, not to mention the broad range of music and dance displayed by an always excellent company.
Swimful at Shelter

Swimful
Sat 30, The Shelter, 50RMB
Quite a Shanghai line-up we have here. Producer Swimful releases his excellent new record PM2.5, injecting his trademark hazy ambient melodies with an infectious mix of dancefloor-friendly and off-beat rhythms. Entrance includes a download code for a digital version of the album, plus a limited edition SVBKVLT face mask. Howell, Alta, Naaah, Damacha and Zean are in support.
Young Forever

Young Forever
MAO Livehouse, 9pm, 80RMB
Meanwhile over at MAO, a local band showcase is taking place, this time with the recently revamped Nonplus of Color topping a bill that also features From Somewhere Else, Orange, Plastic Chocolate and Little Monster. Expect psych-rock, punk, a David Bowie tribute and more. This is MAO's last proper gig for around a month - after this their space is getting turned into a haunted house for CNY.
Soichi Terada

Soichi Terada
Arkham, 10pm, 70-80RMB
50 year-old Soichi Terada doesn't exactly have the typical producer backstory. Until relatively recently he was barely known outside of his native Japan, his biggest claim to fame being that he composed the soundtracks for Sony’s Ape Escape PlayStation games. But last year Dutch producer Hunee released Sounds From the Far East, a compilation of some of Terada’s best tracks from the late ’80s and early ’90s, and he suddenly found himself getting a flood of offers to play gigs around the globe. Thankfully he accepted this offer at Arkham.
