Background music, umbrellas and phone charging facilities - just three things the China National Tourism Administration think public toilets should be providing in this day and age.
As part of a proposed new three-level classification for public toilets in touristy areas, the agency has said top-level facilities ought to also provide wheelchairs and walking sticks and offer free wifi service (if in an area of crappy phone signal).
The people at CNTA might want to think about their priorities though - there's no mention of toilet paper or soap on the list of requirements. Toilet paper in a toilet, don't be absurd!
Similar to the financial credit rating system, lavatories could achieve an A, AA or AAA rating depending on how well they meet the criteria.
AAA-level loos require the time to reach a toilet to be no more than five minutes, and they 'should broadcast suitable background music'. Exactly what music the agency had in mind isn't mentioned.
AA-level should leave guests no more than 8 minutes from a point of relief, and western-style cubicles should provide paper seat covers. Even the lowly A-level still requires toilets to provide 'services like free charging for mobile phones'.
General requirements include the ratio of male to female cubicles to be under 2:3, and the ratio of western to squat should be higher than 1:5. Places that charge guests to enter also shouldn't be charging them to use toilets - that'd just be shitty.
