If you thought Shanghai's metro tunnel diggers would be putting away their pickaxes after this year's latest unveiled metro expansions, you'd be wrong. Authorities have announced the network will have a further 250km by 2025 and feature nine brand new lines, an increase of 40 percent on today's metro offering.
The latest announced expansion will begin in 2017 according to People's Daily, with notable new areas on the network including Chongming and Changxing islands. The planned improvements include adding rail services as well as expanding the metro, such as a branch line from Changxing Island to Hengsha Island.
There are also long term plans to connect the Shanghai metro with the Suzhou and Wuxi transit systems. Below you can see the planned map for 2020 - 2025's map will be even more full (and confusing).

Shanghai currently has a 617km metro network (including the 29km maglev line) serving 366 stations, making it the second-longest metro system in the world behind Seoul. The way things are going Shanghai won't be second for much longer.
