导读:Your guide to the best events and things to do in Shanghai this month
Around Town

This is your essential guide to the best events, things to do and places to eat and drink in Shanghai in November 2015, including joining the World Congress on Art Deco, seeing theatre event of the year War Horse, partying with Taylor Swift and lots, lots more.

1. Watch director Jia Zhangke's Mountains May Depart
In cinemas now

Mysterious, ambitious and exhilarating, the renowned Chinese director Jia Zhangke's latest film Mountains May Depart follows the lives of two generations of the same family as they struggle to cope with China’s breakneck speed development.

From his first full-length film, Pickpocket, to 2013’s A Touch of Sin, Jia has consistently used his position as director to craft statements about the way people live in China today. Read our interview with director Jia Zhangke on shooting the future on our website.

2. Get enlightened by leading literati lights
M on the Bund, until Sunday 8 November

In it’s 12th year, the Shanghai Literary Festival returns with a revamped format – shorter, running over seven nights in a newly spruced up M on the Bund following the closure of its former home, Glamour bar. A stable of novelists, poets, foodies, children’s authors, adventurers and sinophiles – some of whom will be familiar to Lit Fest veterans – will descend on The Bund to deliver a wide-ranging programme of talks on everything from Beethoven in China to the outcome of this month’s general elections in Myanmar. See the full schedule and highlights of this year's lit fest on our website.

3. Immerse yourself in an world of Art Deco
Various locations, until Friday 6 November

Shanghai's glorious Art Deco heritage is celebrated this month with the World Congress on Art Deco, hosted in Shanghai by Art Deco experts and Historic Shanghai founders Wm Patrick Cranley, Tina Kanagaratnam and Tess Johnston. Art Deco aficionados will pour into the city between November 1-6 for a series of lectures, walking tours, ritzy evenings out on the town, and even a dinner featuring a vintage Shanghai menu, exposing the vast riches of Art Deco that the city has to offer beyond the likes of the well-known Fairmont Peace Hotel and the Paramount Ballroom.

Check out the five must-sees during the Art Deco-stuffed week on our website.

For the full schedule of events, visit shanghaiartdeco.net. To purchase a ticket for the full week, visit yoopay.cn/event/ARTDECO-SH2015, or for special day tickets for Shanghai residents, email shanghaiartdeco@gmail.com with your phone number and address.

4. Go Dali-crazy
K11, opens from Thursday 5 November until February 2016

Two Dali exhibitions are going on in town at the same time - one is Crazy Dali held at Bund 18, which opened in September and mainly focuses on the artist's bronze sculptures, while the other is entitled Media - Dali and hits K11 this month from Thursday 5.

5. Cycle through films with Bicycle Film Festival
Anken Air, Thursday 5-Sunday 8 November

If you love bikes, and you love film, prepare to be in your element. For the very first time, the international Bicycle Film Festival will be stopping in China for a celebration of cycling through film, art and music. The festival will showcase a range of screenings of movies from the last 30 years, including Frédéric Favre’s Cyclique, Bikelordz about the self-invented bicycle BMX culture in Ghana, My Ride on Britain’s only female Muslim bicycle group and more.

See our website for what other films are on the bill.

6. Catch 1927 Theatre Company's Golem
Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, Friday 6 - Saturday 7 November

The latest work from the wildly creative 1927, this story features an animated clay man and a series of colourful characters. In the company's barbed comment on technology, protagonist Rob buys Golem as his assistant, and watches as he takes over his life. Not to be missed.

Read our preview of the show on our website.

7. Devour juicy burgers and hotdogs at Charlie's
91 Changshu Lu, near Changle Lu

Burger lovers pay attention: there's a new burger joint in town. Charlie's has taken over (most of) Piro's former space with a colourful decor, laid back atmosphere and some tasty burgers. Be sure to try their bacon cheeseburger (45RMB) that comes with juicy patty, crispy bacon, crunchy homemade pickles, beautifully caramelised onions, lettuce and tomato. Order their Awesome Fries and hot dogs too - you won't be disappointed. Read the full review on our website.

8. Party with Tay Tay
Mercedes Benz Arena, Tuesday 10 - Thursday 12 November

Following her sold out show here last year, Tay Tay returns to Shanghai this month for not one but three shows, despite her using the somewhat sensitive title of the 1989 Tour. All of the three concerts are already sold out - apparently people can't get enough of her, maybe hold your very own Taylor Swift concert in one of those KTVs in the city and sing through all of her songs instead?

9. Make the most of Singles Day

Wednesday 11 November (i.e. 11/11) is Singles Day, an annual occasion marked since the mid-’90s by Chinese youth who are yet to partner up in a society where getting married and continuing the family line is often of paramount concern. The festival of singledom has become increasingly commercialised in recent years with online retailers seizing on the date to create their own equivalent of the US’s Black Friday by slashing prices on a range of goods. Go grab some good deals online or celebrate going solo in style.

10. See Daniel Craig as 007, possibly for the last time
In cinemas, from Friday 13 November

The latest Bond outing, Spectre, is a film that gathers all the great – and some of the not-so-great – things about the three previous films in the Craig-as-Bond cycle into one rousing, spectacular, scattershot and somewhat overextended victory lap. See Daniel Craig return with Sam Mendes at the helm for more girls, gags and bad guys - word is the man himself might be in Shanghai for the premiere too...

See our website for an interview with Daniel Craig on why he's 'over Bond'.

11. Savour Indian classics at Rangoli
Rm 203, Bldg 1, Taikang Terrance, Lane 169 Jiangou Zhong Lu, near Ruijin Er Lu

If you love Indian food, be sure to check out the newly opened Rangoli. The normal menu is extensive (over 75 dishes in total) and ranges from salads and samosas (from 25RMB) and chicken and fish tikka (60RMB). But you’re not here for the normal menu, you’re here for the buffet. The set lunch here is 55RMB (11am-3pm) and a dinner buffet for 80RMB (5-10.30pm). The dinner buffet includes free flow beer and soft drinks. More importantly, it includes a good range of curries (both veggie and meat), salads and tandoori meats that are regularly refreshed and flavourful. While ‘buffet dining’ can sometimes be another way of saying ‘dull, lazily prepared dishes that were better two hours ago’, at Rangoli you get options that are varied and tasty.

12. Vote for your favourite venues

Go vote for your favourite venues in the city and help them win our Best of Shanghai Awards, which celebrate the best venues, events and people that made our city so great in 2015.

Cast your vote before voting closes on Sunday 15 November.

13. Catch award-winning show War Horse
Shanghai Culture Square, Sunday 15 November - Sunday 17 January.

A collaboration between the National Theatre of the UK and the National Theatre of China brings the Mandarin version of War Horse to Shanghai, with a starring-role puppet you can't believe is made of cane and nylon. This is the theatre event of the year. Don't miss out.

Read our interview with director Alex Sims and puppet director Tommy Luthere on our website.

14. Hang out at Drink Up
169-4 Jianguo Zhong Lu, near Ruijin Er Lu

This newly opened craft beer bar located out the back of Taikang Terrace sells a range of imported bottles such as Leffe Brun from 24RMB. You can enjoy a reasonably priced night on the beers by sticking to the more readily available names (there’s regularly a shopping trolley filled with mainstream brands for 10RMB), but it’s far more interesting to get stuck in to Drink Up’s harder-to-find offerings. They’ve got beers from the likes of Dogfish Head, Baird and Boulevard breweries, which are not often seen in Shanghai and are well worth sampling, even if it means prices rise to around 40-60RMB per bottle.

Warning: the atmosphere is far from pretentious. You may find yourself staying here all night.

15. Dance to Neon Indian
Qianshuiwan Creative Arts Centre, Friday 20 November

Excellent electronic artist Alan Palomo, better known under his recording moniker Neon Indian, makes his first visit to Shanghai this month. Having originally been cast as one of the leaders of the 'chillwave' movement together with the likes of Washed Out and Toro Y Moi, Neon Indian's new album VEGA INTL. Night School sees Palomo moving into funked up disco and techno territory, all while maintaining his knack for infectious pop hooks.

Read online for our interview with Neon Indian to find out how his album is the result of theft and a stint on a cruise ship.

16. Celebrate Thanksgiving

This year Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November 2015. To help you celebrate, Time Out presents a round up of the Shanghai restaurants offering Thanksgiving dinners for you this year. See our guide to pre-prepared turkey dinners to take home - and discover top notch Thanksgiving recipes to cook yourself from Shanghai chefs.

Happy Thanksgiving!

17. Get lost in Flying Lotus's immersive show
Qianshuiwan Creative Arts Centre, Thursday 26 November

King of the LA beats scene and peddler of world-beating experimental hip hop Flying Lotus is coming to Shanghai this month, bringing his full, mega-fantastic, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink AV live show with him. For those not familiar with it, let us assure you that it is much, MUCH more than just a projector screen unsympathetically stuck behind a DJ. It is a production on a huge and all-encompassing scale.

This is a big booking - not to be missed.

18. Cosy up at Shanghai's hidden cafes

One of Shanghai’s best kept secrets is its raft of hidden cafes. But where do you go when there are so many of them? No worries, we've headed through unmarked doors and down laneways to hunt out the finest for you.

Keep an eye on our website for the roundup soon.
