Five people were injured at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport on Sunday afternoon after an unnamed man threw a home made explosive device near a check-in desk at terminal 2. The device, which according to some local media reports consisted of a number of fire crackers melded together inside a glass bottle, went off at around 2.20pm on Sunday 12 June, with reports of a second small explosion soon afterwards.
One of the five rushed to hospital was the attacker himself, who reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed himself in the throat after setting off the bottle. Authorities have said he is now in a critical condition in intensive care; they have so far not commented on any possible motive for the attack.
Three tourists were also taken to hospital for treatment while another was treated for light injuries at the airport's on-site clinic. Police and security forces quickly closed off the area in terminal 2 and stepped up their presence throughout the airport, though other flights in and out of the busy transport hub were reportedly unaffected by the incident.
The video below shows panicked travellers running away from the scene after spotting the bottle with smoke emanating from it, before it subsequently explodes.
'A beer bottle filled with white smoke rolled right by my feet. I was scared and made off at once,' Ni Bowen told the Associated Press. Eyewitness Susan Shen also saw the bottle 'with a burning fuse', she told Shanghai Daily. 'And then suddenly the bottle exploded with a loud bang and colourful flash like fireworks. Later, a similar bottle rolled in and triggered the second explosion.'
