The best of the week

Around Town

M on the Bund's Mini Litfest

Saturday 19 - Saturday 26, M on the Bund

This 'Mini LitFest' kicks off this weekend and continues all next week. Highlights include Qiu Xiaolong (pictured), writer of the Inspector Chen series, and Shanghai-based author Tess Johnston. Any excuse to stop by the Bund-side location is a treat, especially when combined with literary talks and M's excellent coffee and lunches.

Elsewhere, the Shanghai International Pet Expo returns in its 2016 reincarnation, with 25,000 square meters of pet-related ridiculousness including styling salons, all manner of accessories and a 'Dog Olympics'. It's on at the World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center from Thursday until Saturday.

Art

Baton Serpent III

Thu 17 - June 17, Power Station of Art

PSA’s retrospective of avant-garde artist Datong Dazhang’s work continues until April 10, but look out for this new show from Huang Yongping too, featuring his extraordinary pairing of a giant fish head and a train carriage in ‘Leviathanation’

Bars and clubs

Juliana Huxtable

Friday 18, The Shelter, 80RMB

In the space of just four years, Juliana Huxtable has gone from putting together club nights in her spare time while working as a legal assistant, to a celebrated ‘it-girl’ on New York’s arts scene. Huxtable’s debut appearance here will see her joined by Zurich underground leading light Asian Eyez, as well as Shanghai’s own Tzu Sing, ChaCha and Howell. Expect a night of high-quality off-kilter and alternative sounds.

Performance

Leonard Slatkin, Jian Wang and the SSO

Sat 19, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall, 180-580RMB

Leonard Slatkin leads incomparable cellist Jian Wang and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in a programme of McTee's Circuits, Barber's Symphony No. 1, Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 E-flat Major and Ravel's La Valse.

Film

Eddie the Eagle

On general release from Fri 18

Taron Egerton is Michael ‘Eddie the Eagle’ Edwards in this against-all-odds story of the British ski-jumper attempting to overcome acute longsightedness and lack of funds to realise his Olympic dream. Hugh Jackman also stars.
