Ahead of the return of Pride's annual drag competition this Saturday at Lucca, here are some tips from previous champions.

I bought my first costume from an internet sex shop. It just covered my chest and important parts. But I couldn’t have worn a bra – to be a drag queen that’s important. So my friend gave me her black dress.
I introduced myself briefly without talking much – but I danced a lot. My leg was shaking but I tried to calm myself down. My friend helped me stay stable and I tried to show people that I could be a confident person.

I was thinking, ‘Try to be a slut, try to be a slut, try to act like a sexy slut’. I took inspiration from the images of sluts I’d seen in various movies.

I got in the mindset of being an asshole. Just strutting around and looking like I don’t care. I wore sunglasses indoors, that helped a lot.

The way I dressed was a cross between Blues Brothers and a Japanese businessman. The clothes were my girlfriend’s work clothes. It’s just classic.

If anyone can pull off a drag king show they’ve got it in the bag. It’s choosing a song and Nightlifelip syncing and dancing, strutting around. If you have coordinated dance moves it’s even better.
