If you've wandered through the hallowed halls of the luxury ifc mall recently, you might have noticed a mock Arc de Triomphe outside the Cartier and LV shops. The Arc marks the spot for an exhibition entitled Inside a French Chateau, which presents various 18th Century European artefacts owned by the Kraemer Gallery, the oldest family-owned gallery in Paris.

It might sound a bit tuhao, but there are some exquisite antiques on display that are well worth a nose around even if you're not in the market for a rug that was originally made for King Louis XIV. And what makes a visit truly worthwhile is cornering Mikael Kraemer for a guided tour.

The sixth generation art collector is there most days and is happy to walk you through what's on show. Literally. He's not really interested in the 'no touching' policy you find at most museums housing such rarefied objects, and will encourage you to step on the aforementioned Louis XIV carpets (pictured left, being stood on by an assistant) and sit in chairs from the residence of Marie Antoinette.

Here's Kraemer lighting a candle as part of an antique dinner set that's probably worth millions:

Kraemer is a charming, informative guide who casually name-drops Europe's great and good while you wander around the 'rooms' of the 'chateau' in the ifc atrium. (A sample quote from one of his clientele: 'For high quality 18th Century, the Kraemer Gallery is my favourite' - Karl Lagerfeld.)

While all of the objets d'art are beautifully preserved, perhaps the most interesting items on display are those with a China connection. These include a bamboo table made in 1780 and a Chinese-Latin dictionary published in Paris in 1742. Kraemer tells us the tome took 40 years to compile, contains over 80,000 Chinese characters and that only 250 were ever made - the one on display here is one of the few surviving copies known to still be in existence.

If you work or live nearby, objects such as this make the exhibition well worth visiting.
