Brrrr. After all this talk of a mild winter, it just got crazy cold. But on the plus side, it's perfect hot springs weather. Here are some of our favourite spots, all within easy striking distance from Shanghai...
Lushan
Located amid the picturesque hills of Jiujiang in northern Jiangxi province, the 40,000sqm
Lushan Resort has eight outdoor hot spring
pools for guests
to relax in while
soaking up the
healing benefits of
the spring water.
The resort also
has a spa and there
are several notable
attractions located
nearby, including the spectacular Lushan Waterfalls.
From 398RMB a night.
Tangshan
EA Hot Springs - located around a 90RMB taxi journey from Nanjing Railway Station - is well worth a visit for its vast range of springs (of which there are around 50) all set in a pretty area of greenery. You can bathe in tea or salt, with fishes or in volcanic mud (20RMB extra), and in themed areas with names such as Finland, Turkey and The Marble Roman Baths. You can also get buried in sand, should you so wish. It's a cheap and cheerful (and therefore very popular) hot spring option.
Entry is 218RMB.
Alternatively, if you’re really looking to splash out, Tangshan is also home to the luxurious Balinese-style Kayumanis Nanjing Private Villa & Spa. The resort provides guests with a private villa experience that includes an attached hot spring bath drawing thermal water from the famous Tangshan mountains, said to have been used exclusively by Chinese royalty back in ancient times.
Villas with private pools start from 1,500RMB a night.
Yushui
Nestled in a bamboo forest near Changzhou and Tianmu Lake, the sprawling Yushui Hot Spring includes 52 outdoor pools featuring an array of minerals, plus a spa area with a lengthy list of massages.
From 485RMB a night.
